What is the Appeal of the Mario RPG Games? are these Games really made for Kids or for Older Fans aka Manchildren?

They're simple but fun

The original Mario RPG for SNES has a very distinctive vibe. It honestly feels very little like Mario, and kind of feels like its own universe, probably because of the Square collab. Never really got into the other ones because they just didn't feel the same. I'd at least recommend trying the ones for SNES.

>> No.9732539

They are made for kids. They are some of my alltime favorite games but that is largely nostalgia.

That said they do have a lot of charm, and are pretty quick and breezy fun games. If you like all ages content like Mario in general then there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy them. If kid friendly fare is offputting to you then obviously you wont.

Paper Mario 1 and 2 are easy enough that they may not be stimulating from a gameplay standpoint, but also offer the most customization and allow for the hardest challenge runs. If you never upgrade your health for example, a first time playthrough should have engaging battles even for an adult.

Likely not ‘best games ever’ status for anyone who didnt grow up with them but they’re solid games.

Super Mario RPG is more kiddy, but Paper Mario has writing that older people will appreciate, especially the Wii one, as bad as it may be gameplay wise.

The gameplay is actually more interesting than the vast majority of JRPGs, and the writing too has the charm and simplicity that is lost on most of them.

>> No.9732961

Paper Mario is pretty average until you realize how fun the badge system is. Also Paper Mario 64 is better than TTYD because they put a limit to your lunacy instead of letting you equip 5+ power rush badges with 5 max HP.

They are decent games. Nintendo RPGs are always vastly overrated because their fans rarely delve deeper into genres. It's a fun chapter based romp, but nothing particularly engaging.

They are enjoyable adventures that come close to finding a great balance between more action game play and RPG style play. If it didn't involve Mario would you ask this question?

>What is the Appeal of the Mario RPG Games?
RPG/JRPG comedies are quite uncommon. The humor of Lunar and Grandia was a by product of the translation, whereas the Mario RPGs are a rare example of comedies in the genre.
It's also interesting that main conflicts in many of these games are local, whereas most JRPG's are about saving the entire world.
One of the reasons why people love games like Tactics Ogre and FF12 is because of their locality, which gives them a sense of realism, and surprisingly enough, most of the Mario RPGs share that appeal, while also retaining the bizarre and absurd playfulness of SNES era RPGs.

I played them for the first time a couple of years ago and I definitely consider PM64 one of the best games ever. It's masterfully designed, has an extremely unique art style, and provides just enough challenge (if self-imposed) as to not be too easy.

It’s one of my all time favorites too. Maybe I just need to stop double-guessing my nostalgia bias for these games. There are plenty of games I played as a kid that I don’t like as much as these, after all.

Just for the record, the Gamecube is not "retro".

The N64 is arguably "retro" at this point, but only if you interpret the term to mean chronological age, not referring to a specific time period (i.e. the 70s through to the end of the 80s).

As others have said, they're unique RPGs due to mechanics: Paper Mario gives you a bunch of characters to fight alongside Mario (complete with unique action commands) and has a unique badge system which encourages challenge runs. Mario & Luigi has more standard RPG mechanics and story structure, but a unique two character gameplay system that encourages dodging and counterattacking enemies.
All of them also feature wacky plots and comedy and overall a chance to tell stories in the Mario series world, which results in characters like Bowser, Peach, Luigi and even Mario himself getting more fleshed out than they otherwise would be in the main games.

I know it's hard to understand as a Gen Z that can only process information through the filter of YouTubers and what you're told is critical analysis, but in the before times we could get interested in something based off the property.

It was Mario in a new genre. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. But it was Mario doing something new and that was enough to draw us in. It's that simple.

Who were they made for? People that like Mario. That was the demographic. Not a certain age or clumping beyond that. And some Mario fans weren't interested. It didn't make them disloyal fans, it didn't require the rest of us to make hours of videos or hop on social media to castigate them. We just let people play what they wanted or not and didn't feel the drive to constantly separate ourselves into extremes where we pick on each other nonstop over bullshit. Try it out.

Nah.
Super's weird in that the stuff around the standard RPG plot is usually absurd (though still in some instances more serious than the other games) while the actual overall plot is played completely straight. The only two twists on the formula are Bowser being one of the four heroes (and he's not really played up as a villain in this game) and Luigi being brainwashed and part of the final boss.
The only time I felt it poked fun at RPG aspects was that you can reject the Pure Heart at the beginning of the game and doom everything, and even then I'm pretty sure Golden Sun or some such game also had that joke.

>> No.9737904

paper mario 64 is one of my favorite games of all time. TTYD is up there as well but falls a bit in my opinion for the fuck ton of backtracking you have to do.
I am biased due to nostalgia but i love coming back to PM64 once every few years. Decent yet rather simple gameplay. great writing/worldbuilding. memorable characters. if you know the badge system you can have some really fun builds. toad town is oozing in soul. fantastic levels.

That's just a play on Paper Mario TTYD. You can just tell the final boss that you decided to side with her and this just ends the game in a game over because you doom the world.

Very little of Super Paper Mario is creative.
