It mostly depends on whether the map itself has any changes on each skill-setting, I dunno if Nightmare does anything in Quake1 aside from removing the pain-stun and making Voreballs too fast to dodge forever - and to be perfectly honest I got no idea if the X-pacs did something unique with their bestiaries when one uses Skill3 to play these addons (unlike a few nasty tricks the Q2's GZ/TR have given to their most annoying new monsters)

With BTSX being a music band tribute, did rare number of you ever wonder how map listing made playlist would've sounded like? Here comes a mixtape of sorts, a rather disjointed collection of ditties. Maybe it could've been salvaged with some shuffling around, but I will wait for 3rd episode to come out. For those who's ignorant of what's this all about, you're probably better off starting with classic GbV albums for an introduction to Robert & Co.

Failed Experiments, Speedtraps, Get Out of My Stations and Tower in the Fountain of Sparks were omitted because those are in fact album names.

They have a habit of infiltrating everything and then taking over the communities. Quake also has this issue right now with them even trying to muscle out Quaddicted with a shitty new site and constant mediocre mapsets that they all band together and mass upvote to make them seem like must - plays and I'm sick of it.

If that's not an acceptable answer (even though it's a real problem) then I'd say the "magnum opus" issue. Everything has to be a giant epic with crushing difficulty now and it's getting out of hand. I can't even finish megawads anymore because they're either too long or get too silly by the end even on HMP.

I agree with you that there are two very annoying camps of people in charge of the communities right now. I'm more into Doom mostly, but I keep the hell away from the forums because the circle jerk and toxic positivity is real. My brief foray into the Quake community has shown it's got similar issues, with one new group trying to re-write all the rules, but I don't think I'll be staying there so it's frankly not my problem.

I know it's a controversial opinion but I actually wish it had a story. Many mods used to have little text crawls after each map explaining what you just did, such as Rubicon Rumble, so it'd be neat if a later update added something like that.
I love Alkaline but I always wondered just who these guys were and why they're all over the multiverse/dimensions. At least stuff like AD can be explained away by being other dark magical realms ruled over by the outer gods.

I feel the same way. Rubicon does look like it deserves a much more in depth story. A lone commando infiltrating some techno fascist headquarters and destroying a doomsday machine. If it were up to me that spinning Rubicon symbol you get for 100%ing the mod would be a portal that leads to some crazy B-movie villain boss fight. Some cybernetic overlord in a giant crazy cape or something, to really cap off the rusty B-movie sci fi feel.

I don't know if this is a makeshift holster function or if something's weird there too.

You know, I can actually recall an anon on here back in 2014-2015 or so using Doombuilder for something of the sort, maybe not that exactly but something similar at least. Unreal Evolution is honestly breddy gud, though I'm still in the starting mines.
>New gun sounds
>Actually useful dodge for once in Unreal
>Increased number of nuisance enemies (bugs and tentacles) but they die quick and gib satisfyingly
>You can reload Automag without switching weapons, which doens't matter but its cool
>Weapons have upgrades but they don't seem to be complete trash -- stuff like +regen for the blaster -- probably keeps the Stinger relevant later once you have Flak gun
>Blaster actually regenerates at an okay pace without needing to hide and eat a bowl of chips while you wait with your game at 200% speed
>Headshots for every weapon. Kind of weird but also makes ambushes more fun because you can own a Lizard / rocket ogre that has you cornered in a few shots
>Tweaked encounters so you need to pay more attention to old levels (even small shuffling like enemies spawning behind a different door than Vanilla when you trigger something). In picrel they changed the gates at the start so you can't blaster-jump out of the ambush and the ogre shooter flak grenades instead of rockets.
Only complaints so far are the cringe modern-style camera waggle when you shoot (but it gets reduced with weapon upgrades I guess) and that the lower TTK makes me take less damage. But I guess its more Doom damage -- unlike Vanilla Unreal where one stray shot wrecks your health and armour, now its if you screw up and get cornered by a Skaarj and multiple nuisance enemies you're dead.
And it doesn't run properly on 227j so no big HUD.

It’s hard denying the simplicity and quality of the first episode, even with a questionable final boss. I’ll always recommend that first above all else, the second episode is safely consistent as well.
AD can be a risky initial recommendation, especially someone unfamiliar with Quake and the mod, but it goes on the list. Bogbottom can be easy to get lost in if its one of the first maps they ever play, or they could start off with some crazy expectations with Tears.

It's finally got guys like me who have been ignoring Quake in favor of Doom (outside of Arcane Dimensions) to try all the other stuff.

There are many things it could do without, the people currently holding all the power in forums, egotists in charge of all the major projects/sourceports, but those are issues with all popular retro IPs at the moment.

So my biggest issue is the nu-Doom fanbase and their incredibly shitty behaviour. In retro FPS circles most of us can be adults about what we like and dislike, but those guys become a bunch of screaming toddlers and internet tough guys if you so much as imply you have criticisms on Eternal. On one hand, it's the one place in the Doom/Quake community where people can still be honest and there aren't a bunch of oversensitive kids trying to reshape an old community into their own personal safe space.
I've discovered so many fantastic mods and wads thanks to this place, and for the most part you guys are cool.

Other than that, petty hatred and anger over people playing in a different way, trying to establish the "right way" to play DOOM etc.

Most of the bad aspects of the Doom cum-unity can be totally avoided though! That's the great thing, the community benefits from custom maps / wads and mods people create online but you don't have to engage with people to have fun.

I like to imagine how the Doom marines' "regular days" in the service are between the demon / supernatural incidents. Especially DOOM 3's intro before shit hits the fan really tickled my brain in a special way about how the space marines' life could be like in different outposts, whether they're fighting rebels or just fighting boredom in the ass end of nowhere. No, charging pinkies are just switching from one step every 2.5 frames (Which makes them 20% faster than regular pinkies) to a step every frame (Which makes them 50% faster than fast pinkies, or three times faster than normal ones) if certain conditions are met, while spawning translucent afterimages behind.

I want it to die if it hits the wall. I'm also not a fan of how spawned monsters don't inherit spawner's target and thus would home on the player even if the spawner is infighting.
I could make it a shorter projectile, offset the sprite and spawn it accordingly. But this would make it clip through the floor, plus I might need to adjust its radius as well, lest it'd clip on the edges anyway.

Right now the dash ghost works perfectly for my desired aesthetic. As long as player isn't allowed to go on higher ground (Although there's two other attacks that actually fire normal projectiles so it's not a big deal in itself)

>> No.9819250

https://files.catbox.moe/hksnrr.zip
This is the fifth update. Aside from superfluous texture alignment, I fixed the rocket launcher lift so the ent file should no longer be necessary, added a message for jumpy players who are able to grab it early, fixed the ogres who always telefragged each other, added a message to make the lightning gun secret slightly easier to find, and moved some cells earlier in the map so it's less useless. As far as actual mods go - having custom code and new monsters/weapons that go well beyond reskins - there hasn't really been that much of an uptick. Even AD is largely piggybacked off of Quoth, and Alkaline is very much derived from AD with some MALICE and Xmen mod monsters shoved in.
There have just been way more maps produced due to the simplicity of Trenchbroom.

In theory they could, but I haven't really found a good way of doing it. Monsters only work because their base thinkrate is fast (0.1 seconds) and I have all their animation frames calling a common function anyway, so they can speed up/down quickly in response to a Time Dilation powerup. It's a bit of a wonky illusion, but it works.
Brush entities often have much higher think times, so a separate entity would need to store the progress towards it relative to the dilation effect. There's also the issue of velocity for things like doors and lifts... I have no idea how to deal with that.

As for the map, I was thinking there's a time dilation powerup hooked up to a machine somewhere that is amplifying its effects. The player has to grab it for the exit on the opposite side of the lava bridge to open, but doing so also causes meteors or whatever was frozen in the sky to start crashing down. The player then has to escape before everything explodes. Relatively simple, and it wouldn't need much expanding beyond what is already there.

I still think its hilarious that they put that guys map in a shitty toilet for Alkaline. I might as well drop this little bomb now.
It's not strictly for /doom/, nobody here has anything to actually do with this, but it might be important context down the road, and this is an anonymous place to drop it.
Janny will strike me down for this, as he should, and I'll take it.

The first part isn't new, but I want it clarified because I see people twisting or reinterpreting this:
>Marisa gets called out on Reddit for grooming a minor
>she's anxious about this, and admits in private circles that it's not all made up
>she had a mutual sexual (online) relationship with a person who was 17 at the time, while she was 29
>she regrets this
>she talked to a number of people about this apparently, with some people saying to just keep quiet and ignore it
>Marisa is instead convinced that the only right thing you can actually do when guilty of this, is to own up to it and admit to it
>publicly
>as she does, she also reveals with her own Discord screencaps that this relation wasn't quite as one-sided as he presented it
>more, that he had been boasting to her about how he was grooming 12 year old boys, and talked about all these nudes of them that he had gathered
>probably for this reason, her accuser disappears himself from the web, scrubbing his internet presence
So that's the first part.

In my opinion, while Marisa is guilty of something nasty, it's not entirely like people present it either, and her accuser, who pushily initiated this relationship, is himself an outright sexual predator, and far worse than her.
I feel personally that Marisa's crime is one which could one day be forgiven, while her accuser rather sounds like a menace to society. Agree or disagree with me, that's unimportant, but the next part is.

>> No.9822887 [DELETED]

What you didn't know, what the dumb, gossiping shits at KiwiFarms don't know:
>Rachael, General Secretary Of The ZDoom Forums, did NOT take kindly to this
>she did not want it known that a trans person in this community was guilty of sexual impropriety
>together with her closest goons, including Candice, they draft up a plan for how Marisa was supposed to recant her admission of guilt
>(nobody fucking knows who Candice is, seemingly she has almost no interest in Doom or even any presence in the community)
>(she's an outsider friend who Rachael brought in to act as some sort of unpaid (?) 'mercenary' moderator for places like ZDF)
>they start work on a pre-written statement for Marisa to present as her own and all
>ZDF staff was then supposed to rigorously defend her from any dissent or questioning

>Marisa, to her credit, and in-line with being honest about her wrongdoing, actually REJECTS this proposal
>so that plan is abandoned, and eventually the drama where Marisa is booted out from everywhere happens
>Rachael is BEYOND livid at this
>she's not just hating the guts of the 'transphobic' staff in servers and spaces where Marisa was removed
>(mind, places where you can sometimes find minors, hence their DUTY to do so)
>Rachael also increasingly loathes how she doesn't have any influence in those places
>with the proliferation of Discord, there's been substantial fragmentation of the ZDoom community, people go and organize projects there and have their own little communities
>communities where Rachael has no reach, and no power
>nor even insight, at best getting hearsay, or crumbs of info from people there who are also ZDF staff or ZDoom devs
>Rachael is not exactly universally liked among those people
>and now these community fragments DARED to act as they wished
Supposedly yearning for 'retribution' against these people and sub-communities, whatever that's supposed to entail. Expect some sociopathic bullshit which will have needless fallout and collateral damage.

I have yet to try the new maps to be frank, but if you can filter-out the authors pretentiousness factor from each level then I would say that Slipgate Sickness is one of the weakest levels of Alkaline since the mod's very first version - it feels like someone's first map at times at times despite being partially made by a seasoned Q1 mapping veteran
