So i did the work and downloaded and updated the "tiny best set go" romset with the latest updates and images for GarlicOS for a 128GB sdcard (93GB). It's good for Miyoo Mini and RG35XX.
I didn't put the files into a zip because sometimes people want to just download the ps1 roms or segacd roms or something.

No, it's caused by vsync. Buffering frames = increased latency. You're delaying the frame output to sync the framerate to the display. Android forces triple buffer vsync.

I know what lag you're talking about. It can be reduced on rooted devices with the performance mode in their kernel/rom. This is why blackserapahs roms for android handhelds are shit. He leaves out performance and includes interactive mode on purpose.

It can't be reduced, it's simply how vsync works. You buffer frames until the display is ready for the next complete frame.
The only way to get zero lag with complete frames is to have a VRR display running at 64hz and running your game at 60hz.

I'm pretty shocked how good the battery life is on the lower end considering the massive screen. Pretty sure that would easily clear 11 hours with wifi turned off. yoshi's island is one of the more demanding snes games too since it uses the FX chip. Could probably get 12, maybe even 13 hours in Megadrive with wifi off.

yeah, it's pretty good for its price. I paid €28 although one of my 2 Gameboys seems to be allergic to it for some reason. It works perfect on one of them while it fails to load on the other even after I blow it and clearned it the Gameboy's cartridge slot with Isopropyl Alcohol. I can't tell if it's the Gameboy or the Cartridge that has the flaw.

I might seriously consider getting this and selling my RP3+. Getting tired of accidentally pressing the volume buttons on the side and it has the start and select exactly where I want them. It's bigger than I like my handhelds but I don't like taking my RP3+ outside because it's just long enough to stick slightly out of my pocket and be kind of annoying. I think I'd rather have this thing to use in bed or stick in a bag and maybe get a Miyoo Flip in the future specifically for sticking in a pocket.

Hello, i stumbled across the topic of retro handhelds thanks to the youtuber WULFF DEN which has come to peak my interest about this particular subject. Now, i am the type of guy who loves the switch due to the ergonomic factor of taking the console wherever you go and as soon as you reach home, you connect to your tv with the dock and play the games using the controller. I was wondering to get the nintendo switch online expansion pack subscription, but paying for 40 bucks every single year seems pretty overkill for me(especially if i want to play classics that you can´t even own). So, i wonder if theres any recent device that could give me the same type of feel as the switch.

Bonus points, if it allows me to connect several devices through usb or bluetooth in order to play local beat em ups, 2D sidescrollers or fighting games in that sort of matter.

Evening, /vr/. I've been off this board for quite some time, and somewhat put my retro focus on the back burner after a crippling desire/obsession to work on my /tg/ stuff kicked in. Anyway, glad to see this general is still alive and well. Just bought a laminated ITA kit, as well as a handful of GBA games between a local retro shop, Ebay and my first ever repro off of Ali. Doom, SMA 2 and Iridion 3D are the highlights of the purchases. Plan on very carefully upgrading my much loved and played, teenage grape GBA with the new screen. Still can't get a damn Pi Zero 2 for my GPi Case though, which is a pain in the ass. Currently playing LttP/Four Swords on my IPS modded GBA. What's everyone else playing lately?

It's funny that people are going back to a proper LCD over the IPS garbage now. I still prefer my AGS-101, it's a bit inferior to the new ITA stuff in terms of color, but I prefer the pixel grid, ITA doesn't have enough horizontal definition for me.

Only high resolution IPS panels with high enough PPI to save us from 2x bilinear hell are a suitable modern replacement.

There are some better shots out there where blacks look a bit blacker on the ITA screens, but maybe you're right. The 101 only looks oversaturated to me in games that were clearly designed for the original GBA. I think the Analogue Pocket tries to fix this, there's a couple of different palette settings so you don't have to hope someone patched a rom correctly.

RG35XX if you are on a budget and/or want something super portable, RG353P if you want something a fair bit more powerful but want to stay under $150, the Retroid Pocket 3+ if you don't mind going over the $150 mark in exchange for a fair amount more power, and past that point in price you might as well just go for a Steam Deck

the RG353 family of handhelds all have a Mini HDMI port for TV connection and all have Bluetooth functionality as well so would work pretty well for "hook up to a TV and use an external controller to play on the couch" purposes

OK. I feel like after all getting RP3+ is an all-round best option, it's not that much more expensive, but having Android on it is nice, the screen is probably way better, and T616 should be way more powerful than some shitty Rockchip RK3566.
I usually see a shitload of those handhelds discussed here, so I thought there was a lot of choice, but I guess with everything else we're entering chink territory. Also I really want a horizontal handheld with a big screen, guess RP3+ is just hard to beat after all.

I was given pic related as a birthday gag gift, and it's pretty damn rad, even if it's three licensed games and a million Famiclone roms. For "perfect" Dreamcast you're going to want a T618 (or better). That includes the Retroid Pocket 3+, Retroid Flip, RG505, RG405M, and Powkiddy X28. They're all extremely good devices and it'll mostly come down to your personal preference on which one to choose. there's also the X18s, but apparently that one is kind of a piece of shit. Generally speaking I'd say the RP3+ is the "safe" option if you don't want to think about it too hard.

These won't be very good for PS2 or anything, but you didn't list that so I didn't put it into consideration.

You'd be surprised how far an RG353P or RG353PS can go.
Pretty much any device should be able to handle the full Game Boy / Color / Advance, NES, and Genesis libraries, these are the easy ones, with a few GBA games that might give it a bit of slowdown if you use one of the more accurate libretro cores.

RG353P is the first device I've had that can actually pull off full speed SA-1 SNES games. The RG351P prior couldn't manage full speed in some of the more demanding SNES games.

PS1 has also been running considerably well on these devices for a while.
Dreamcast is where the RG353P starts to fall short, it can run some games full speed, but not as many.

Mentioning it because RG353P goes for around $130. You're looking at a situation where you could be spending significantly more to get full speed Dreamcast.

JELOS recently added support for Dolphin too. Whilst you technically can boot Gamecube and Wii games on an RG353P, even something like Mega Man 9 only runs at 50% speed.
I'm curious if there's any kind of custom Dolphin build or config that might address that, but I doubt it. The RK3566 isn't THAT powerful of a device.

Yeah it's fucking huge. The battery life is a bit misunderstood, though. It is indeed shit when playing AAA stuff, often coming around 2 - 3 hours. For most of what I play however, which is low or midrange stuff, 4 - 7 hours is pretty typical. I even got it to 8.5 hours once when emulating Megadrive, but that was also with minimum brightness, sound off, wifi off, lowest wattage, etc. I was basically just trying to see how much I could squeeze out of it.

VibrantDeck can only go so far before darker mid-tones are elevated and details are smooshed into clipped, pale imitations on primaries. Even messing with gamma and saturation levels in vibrantdeck, the difference between it and my OG Switch is pretty staggering.
Try something like Toree 3D or 2 (they're like a dollar each) - the 1st stage should be almost searingly hot pink but it's a really pale bluish purple on the Deck's display - the screen is simply incapable of displaying the actual colors. It's annoying me almost every time I use it.

For retro games with saturated colors, the Deck screen simply doesn't do them justice imo, Vibrantdeck or no.

Yes and no. You don't need to configure anything unless you want to, the defaults just werk. The most you have to do is check a box for which emulators you want installed on the RP3 the first time you turn it on. The front-end will launch your emus and stuff for you, but you can also just launch the emulators directly yourself if you want. You don't have to use a frontend.

I'm on disc 2 of Xenogears and I can't believe something so small could seamlessly play playstation games in an ultra teenie weenie device. It's half the size of my dang ol phone. That's probably a form of ear protection, many devices limit the maximum volume output from the 3.5mm audio-jack as safety.

What i don't get is why they don't invite more community work. Look at the RG35xx, we don't even use the GPU to offload work, it's totally unused except as a frame buffer.

My RG351P has a funny issue where the left stick drifts slightly up and the right one drifts slightly down, making it only really usable for 8 directional movement. The difference is power, but it's not really a difference, both can play all unless. They both have controls and feel. The dpad on the XX has too many diagonals. The Mini plus is slightly smaller, but bigger, and feels like a miniature Miyoo Mini Plus. The XX is slightly bigger, but smaller, with weird pianos and feels like a small Chinese man. They are equally the same as themselves.

They are both really close.
The miyoo has a bigger battery while the anbernic has a longer chin, I find that more comfortable.
Also anbernic has hdmi out (not relevant) and the miyoo has wifi (not sure howmuch value that has)

In the end you are best off to install the 3rd party os (onion or garlic) and you get a very similar experience for both.

Just get whatever is cheaper.

Because most of the time, the manufacturer doesn't have the right to distribute low level access in the firmware or anything for the community to get in easily and get the work done in a quick manner which undermines the point of sending it out early before the default software is good. They buy the chips used in the handhelds from a fabless chip maker which has terms on how they can only distribute what they have in binary, but they'll leave the system open enough to hope to get unofficial support for Linux distros like that. Also furthermore, they can't just take the stuff the community makes and put it in their devices by default without a payment scheme due to open source licenses and so that sucks for them too. Some of it also is ignorance and I do think they should send it out early for the people working on alternative OS/firmware for the devices even if things aren't ready day 1. In the end, all they can do is accept the status quo and keep doing what they have been doing. It would be nice if they could do that but the problem is back in the chip manufacturer's hand who could give not two cares about handheld market who are a nice bonus in comparison to the Android TV box and single board computer market.

Software. Hardware can brute force some games but it's nowhere near where you want for most games even using the newest and greatest chips, let alone 5+ year old chips trying to do this. The current Android flagship mobile chips can run those emulators, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has approximately GTX 1050 performance and the CPU has most cores around the 10700k/2700x level. The main problem is the cost to port, and the price of the chipsets that can do them. Come back in 5 years or something when they become throwaway and cheap enough to be put in a handheld the price of the RP3+.
