She had a crippling fear of dentists for the longest time because a dentist botched a procedure so badly it gave her a traumatic oral fibroma (a growth) where her teeth meet the roof of her mouth. This gave her a speech impediment that caused her to make a lip noise she is super sensitive about when she says certain words, which is what gave her the fear of dentists, because she was worried any procedure had the chance of worsening her condition or giving her a new one. So, she was living off of a NEET diet of sugar while neglecting her oral health for a handful of years, which is a recipe for cavities. In Polka's case her condition is so severe she needs 5 whole appointments to treat all of her cavities. She only went to the dentist to learn this because one of the cavities reached the nerve and infected it, which put her though a terrible amount of pain and ended up requiring the inflamed nerve to be removed entirely.
