Japanese culture values youth above all else. Characters have large eyes and small noses with retreating chins, 'moe' being one of the largest driving factors behind much of the media industry in Japan. Cuteness is scientifically proven to be linked to our perception of youth. There is an obsession with high school and the sexualization of high school age characters. Characters have high pitched voices, with deeper tones being considered niche, to the point where nips bullied a Hololive idol with a deeper voice until she shifted it up higher. Almost every anime or manga you've ever heard of or seen has a popular cunny character, some of the most popular anime and manga have a loli or a shota as a main character. Women that would be seen as in their prime in the West are considered to be too old to even be worth fucking in Japan.
The anime and manga industries are ran and funded by a massive and entirely unique pedophile culture encompassing almost all of Japan, to the point where it is a cornerstone of their civilization. To be 'moe' is to be cute, small, youthful, fuckable.

It's not 'as popular as you might think'. But they are wrong. They are coping. They will continue to cope. Because they will forever cope when confronted with a world that absolutely destroys any sense of morality they have already developed, and realize that they enjoy it themselves.
