I've no idea what the difference would be or what climate model we're using, at this point I mostly just care about keeping the oceanic climate we have.
I don't think I've payed any attention to the island thing, but if you care about it then I don't see why I should interrupt that.

Oh that's excellent, sort of a joint warring states period of 2 different cultures, that and the conflict could be on the status of the petty states from the frontier, it'd give us a good reason to have the peninsula under Republican control and to have our contries hold some amount of reasonable deniability on whether or not we did go to war, which would help the governments spin out propaganda depending on the status of the diplomatic relationship.
If we are to have no changes in the map, it could also be reasoned to have come from some peace agreement to facilitate trade across the rivers and plains. If we are to have some small geographic changes, then some smaller hills could be placed as important museums and forts. That and I'd have to revise the hydrology map to see where I could put them.
I'll have to see how I develop the Hoshiyomian cultural influence on the Republic, sounds fun.
