Ironically Billie Eilish survives off mediocre vocal technique but genius mixing, while gura gets the opposite treatment. It's really not super hard or complicated to do well mixed vocals for pop music, but it's fucking absurd to do VERY well mixed vocals for pop. Just cause it's recent see BTS - Butter for examples of what sounds like relatively simple vocal engineering. There is definitely a level of autotune but it's super subtle and the actual main effect is a pretty subdued vocal doubler and distortion chain. But it's actually so much more than that, there is an absurd amount of under the hood stuff going on to keep the sound coherent and that's what Billie Eilish gets right too. There's zero masking in any BTS or Billie song, and it's fucking rampant in japanese pop. This is the "american pop magic" that functions in almost the same way as the "hollywood magic" did back in the 70s-90s. It's a difference in sheer refinement of technique but it's also a blatant abuse of modulation and breaking conventional mixing strategies, it's quite literally brute forcing sound, but it works.
