This is has been a thing for over a century. I always chalked it up to a fringe element in the Japanese nationalist scene wish to divorce themselves from the rest of Asia and throw their lot in with Europe. Mainly by saying their true genetic origin, being the Jōmon, is actually Finno-Ugric and thus true Europeans. After the Meiji restoration you had a lot of adaption of the national identity to westernize, so it came with the territory. But accepting this would mean that the Japanese were humiliatingly subjected to genocidal rape on a massive scale that their genepool was irrevocably transformed by Yayoi invasions.
This would also undermine the right to rule of the current ruling Imperial dynasty though.
