If I'm playing ranked, I like to play two hours after I wake up. An hour before playing, I move a Monster Energy from the fridge to the freezer and start drinking it ICE COLD after half an hour. Once I am caffeinated and enjoying the rest of my drink, I start playing Mahjong. It almost always works, and the few times that I haven't done it I have failed catastrophically. Whether it's a good luck charm or just the aid of caffeine, it works and I swear it affects my sands.
