That's what Takamori should have been since the start. Just two friends who had different paths which converged. Life and death lore, opposites yet undeniably linked. Not a fake romance they couldn't act and which made Mori seem cold at times.
I'm glad they did get back together a few times and are trying to stay in contact.

Phoenixes are meant to travel different dimensions. It's my thought that Death-Sensei initially assigned Kiara to Mori as a test of her skill. Kiara being the last Phoenix in this timeline (as her debut stated). Through Kiara's own ability she died and came back to this dimension and to Mori. Something about that Reaper made Kiara want to see more. Over time, Mori embraced it. Death-Sensei allows it because he sees how it's helped his apprentice grow closer to something and learn to appreciate humanity. Mori used to only see humans at their end and often asked "why bother?", yet she could talk to Kiara about what life actually is.
