It has nothing to do with "idol culture". There are thousands of vtubers that do what you say and, yet, the audience clearly chose Hololive style of vtubing
What you are proposing is that they give that audience up instead of simply doing what is giving them fame, fortune and a good time

Nyanners had close to a million subs before she even took on a vtuber model. She brought a huge name recognition with herself before VShojo was even a thing.

Her audience is in the dump tho, and it is more likely than not that she got it through contacts and name recognition than through the current state of her career
