Holding coins is a net loss only if their price deflates, i.e. during Bogration. That being said, now we have players for whom the optimal play would be to buy even then, since they would be unable to spend their liquid better later.
I think it's okay to hold liquid through dividends as a newfag. I also would say that you shouldn't push to spend it all right before dividends, since the multicoin fees are usually bigger than dividends themselves, and you can just slowly invest it during the week. But you should absolutely aim to zero yourself out when you're in the Top 100 or so.
