The big difference is that they're livestreamers and real otakus/weirdos with all the "negatives" that come with it.
It's hard to genuinely get attached to someone who just uploads videos, you rarely get to see their real personality not because they're hiding it but because there's not many chances to see it in a natural way, it's the live element that cuts off most of the bullshit and lets you see someone for who they really are.
My first real internet crush like 15 years ago was Alizée and even if i was really obsessed at one point i actually got over her fairly quickly, following someone who you can only see in very carefully selected situations builds an invisible wall that you don't notice is there until you fall for a vtuber.

I'm actually sure Coco managed to drag quite a few /pol/tards into forcibly growing up by her actions, everyone has to at some point, it's the most casual dramafag section of them that never got a hint, but really it's not like she's losing anything of worth in the first place, the sooner those retards fuck off the better.
