Yeah. Most people don't realize really the main reason Vietnam is communist is they just wanted independence from foreign rule, and China + Russia would support them.
So when the American-Vietnam war was over, and China starting trying to take territory from the late 70's to early 90s, Vietnam did what China should have expected- told them to fuck off and so they fought.

If we had actually left our OSS guys who were working with Ho Ci Mhin on the ground, post WW2, and actually kept the French from coming back, Vietnam could have been another Asian Tiger of economics by now. We (the democratic west) never had to be enemies with them, if only a few better choices were made by a handful of men.
