you probably heard that shit on /v/ or related boards because Tales is treated like VShoujo here for being a) not FF and b) heavily controlled by Sony in the past and with shifty localizations etc.
tl;dr: it's the go-to franchise for action-based combat RPGs with usually rich stories, the recent entries have been hit-or-miss.
The pinnacle of Tales depending on when you joined into the Series is any of Abyss, Symphonia, Vesperia or Graces depending on what you like best: Abyss for a really good story which is edgy as shit, Symphonia for Nostalgiafags and as babby's first Tales of (spoiler: it's always the church), Vesperia as the best trade-off between good story/characters and good combat, and while Grace's story and characters are kinda meh the combat is quite nice actually.
Newer games suffered bad art direction (horrible 3D, Vesperia being the last one with good old cell shading), Zestiria was homobait with a shit story without twists, Berseria was edgy as shit but fun enough, Arise was a mixed bag of "we want the casual audience but we also want to be Dark Souls on higher difficulties now" and all-in-all just was too short and had way too little characters to even count.
So yeah, basically go play Vesperia. It's good. I vow for it. Tales Games usually start out clunky and a bit spammy, 5 hours in you chain your first comboes, 40 hours later you routinely demolish a wide array of enemies with your little lolibaba pirate mixed pistol/knive/mage character who is also cheeky as fuck.
