They are, but swords aren't the only melee weapon. There is a full list attached, plenty of melee weapons to use both modern and historical. Guns are also great, although they're not the be all and end all. Melee focused characters can do a lot of great work, they get much fancier tricks than people shooting guns. Although there is a heavy experience cost for that stuff.
