A little off-topic. And I can't say about the other things, but at least basic linear algebra isn't a meme, not only it's one of the basics of mathematics, it's also very important in everyday life because of money and economy are a thing. Imagine not knowing what an equation is.

But yeah academia will study stuff just for the sake of studying it. I used to relish when I had subjects that could actually have use in real life, like probability and statistics for example.
