Graduations, the death of the character, and the secrecy culture exist because these companies know that while they own the vtubers IP and can make them sign an NDA to never talk about their time as the character, fans can choose to value the person behind the model more and follow them wherever they go and tell others about their new identity. To prevent this they tried to convince fans that graduations were the final death of the character and it's improper to talk about the new character because that's "what the vtuber wants" (It isn't, they want as many fans as they can get but they're silenced by an NDA.) Luckily as more western fans are brought into the hobby, many of them find this practice to be extremely weird and exploitive and make sure to shill their favorite vtuber's reincarnation as much as possible so old fans can find them again.
