The reason is that the beginning and middle of gantz were a exceptionally high quality when it came to art, and the story was very unconventional. The unconventionality was largely due to the very bizarre premise and the flawed characters it depicted.
The stories were harsh, imaginative, and at times they told very uplifting heroics from regular people facing monstrous situations.
It kept upping the ante and the end is more controversial, since there is really nowhere sane the story could go. The soul of it was in the early missions.
