It was too anime for the West and not anime enough for nips, then they over-corrected and went full anime for VC2 and 3, but also put them on the PSP and gutted the actual gameplay. Then the series died for a few years before they ported the first game to Steam and it did pretty well for itself, which gave SEGA the false notion that people were interested again, but then they made that one spinoff that no one wanted (or played) before finally going back to the working formula to release VC4, which despite being a great game also somehow managed to look worse than the first game which came out 11 years prior, and it also bombed
Bottom line is no one wants to play strategy RPGs not named Fire Emblem
