Well I won't say it's impossible for an indie to strike rich on commissioned rigs but it's a lot less impressive on a technical standpoint. It's expected for corporate VTubers using company models to be on commissioned rigs but you do lose a lot of the homegrown charm of indies that way.
Protip: Find niche shit that gets overlooked all the time and expand from there. Take advantage of being too small to be noticed to stream popular games that corporates can't because of restrictions. And for the love of God, remember that while streaming you're practically braindead so play smooth brain games or games you can riff on if possible. It's okay to play a game you've played before, not every stream needs to be blind.

fair but i dont know if the broader vtuber audience really cares if the model was self-made or not, beyond like "oh thats cool." a lot of indies ive seen use commissioned stuff anyway. i am at least making graphics/other presentation stuff myself and going really heavy on a unique visual style, but thats like 2% of the puzzle at most anyway.
i plan on playing a lot of classic games across various genres, a lot of which are pretty overlooked at least in the chuuba space. cover every niche pretty much. going for this much variety can be risky but im trying to be the vtuber i would want to watch and i get bored of seeing the same shit all the time so ill make it a sell

Didn't you see the twitch leaks? The top ten thousand of millions and millions of streamers do not even make the equivalent of an average american income. Making a living off streaming is a pipe dream. Do it only if you enjoy it rather than attempting to climb some self-imagined hierarchy or beat the market. Ultimately streaming is a pretty mediocre sort of entertainment that leaves nothing of note anyway, compared to creating media that is intellectually structured. A groucho marx film, a play of oscar wilde, or a woody allen film during his peak years shows more line by line wit and creativity than hours and hours of streams. Most of streaming is about ephemeral parasociality and developing a trite repetitive set of community in-jokes with maybe only a handful of emergent moments of insight and actually innovative. As an example, earlier you used this exaggerated metaphor:

Really a derivative tactic of abrasive comedy that has already been mastered by creators like Yathzee in his Zero Punctuation reviews. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that you're better than other vtubers by replacing one set of Eastern cliches (cutesy moe antics) with another set of Western cliches (abrasive cynical 'angry man' humor, bluntness, 'telling it straight' and trying to be a George Carlin ripoff with none of the wordplay) and thinking that that functions as innovative, 'better' entertainment. It might be entertaining to the half a dozen dunderheads who can't tell a difference between genuinely insightful and creative abrasiveness with its thousand-and-one derivations, but it still boils down to shtick. A Western-engineered shtick that may seem reactionarily different from Eastern style 'seiso', but a shtick all the same.

Either way streaming and anything creative is a top-heavy profession where only the less-than-1% ever make it, useless to grind merely for the clicks and one-upping the competition unless one has a genuine interest in it. well duh that line is derivative because i came up with it on the spot without much thought rather than exerting all my creative brainpower into writing the funniest line possible (because its a fucking 4chan post, im not trying to be yahtzee on here).

its kind of like streaming itself - a lot of the time youll be saying a lot of mediocre jokes that offer enough mild entertainment to keep people around, and every once in a while after you say enough bullshit youll strike gold and those are the moments that get clipped and remembered. you can increase the frequency of coming up with "gold" by, i dunno, taking improv classes or studying past writers and comedians or something, but theres only so much one brain can do.

no shit its not going to be as dense in terms of pure wit as a film or a play because its all come up with live on the spot rather than carefully written, edited, and structured lines generally intended to waste as little time as possible. an hour of streaming is an hour of streaming, but it probably takes much longer to write a comedic script of that length, despite it being delivered to the audience in a much shorter timespan. streaming naturally has a pretty low optimization of wit to hours but if youre focused on that youre kind of missing the point because its a largely different form of entertainment to a film or even a stand-up comedy set.

Dunno is op's still here, but I'm in a somewhat similar boat to you, albeit I can't even hope to stream in my current situation, so I'll have to wait much much longer. I still watch streams when I've got the time, but I'll see all the missed banter with chat, joke opportunities, and more creative ideas and antics as I watch them. It doesn't bother me though because I know that just means I've got something to offer, which obviously just excites me that I'd be able to entertain people more. I was the class clown in high school, so I've gotten damn good at fast humor and making whole rooms worth of people laugh. Plus, It'd be boring as shit if everyone was like me.
