There is a big difference. I learned Swedish for half a year and it is enough to understand people, get the gist of newspaper articles and talk or write to people without resorting to English, so I guess I am its equivalent of N5. For japanese (watched anime for almost 15 years, always subbed, have jisho open all the time and tried to learn reading while also listening to JP chuubas without translations), I can understand some words, read all Kana (but not fluently), and can recognize just enough Kanji (maybe 30) to know things like "歌 in the title probably means it's a karaoke stream" and "this is a sub celebration stream because it says a number and the thousand or ten thousand kanji". I have no hope for learning how to produce parsable japanese on my own.

That is true only for languages with similar gramatical rules, with a language like Japanese where you cannot make direct translations from one to the other you have to learn it properly in the right technical way, the reason as to why you can "learn a language just by listening to it all day" is because of association, you associate certain words with ones you already know and go on from context until you fully understand all the words, that does not work with languages that are drastically different
