Japan uses a points based immigration system. Degrees are a good amount of points but not enough by themselves. You also need to be young, have a good salary, hold patents, pass at least the JLPT N2, and/or have research papers published somewhere. You can mix and match but it's basically designed to attract highly intelligent researchers to the country. Work visas are also possible but harder to get since a Japanese country has to take a chance on you, and you'll basically need to know Japanese before you start.

I think you can also get an education visa if you can somehow enroll in a Japanese college. Supposedly you can literally just sign up for the Japanese language courses to stay in the country on a student visa but that's pretty shaky ground to base a life around. That said, like any first world country Japan has a low birth rate and is desperate to replace it's aging work force with young, intelligent men. There are a few angles to play so if you're serious you should do your research.

Keep in mind that the process isn't fool proof even if you do get to Japanese literacy, have a good degree, get hired by a company willing to sponsor you, etc. IIRC there's also a minor catch 22 with certain work visas where it's technically impossible to get, since you have to have a visa to work for a company, and you need to work for a company to get a visa. It's worth really researching, I'm by no means an expert. Also, keep in mind that whatever job you get, you'll be making less money and probably doing more work in Japan. In my sector if I took work with a Japanese company I'd be looking at a 15% pay cut at minimum. Where ever you live is going to be smaller, too. Though other cost of living stuff like food/transportation isn't bad. America also doesn't really like dual citizenship so they may ask you to renounce it if you go naturalization.

Especially with that last part in mind, ask yourself if it'll really be worth it. Like yeah, you're horny for a vtuber or whatever, but Japan is far from a paradise. Chances are, even if you do succeed at fluency/citizenship, you'll have to live your life as a relative outsider. Just for the chance of maybe meeting the IRL counterpart of an online entertainer.

I’d like to add to this, from what I’ve been told Japan doesn’t allow any dual citizenship at all. I currently hold an Australian passport and a Japanese passport but once I turn 21 I’ll have to pick one of the two, and if I pick the Japanese passport I won’t be able to become a citizen anywhere else. If I wasn’t born half Japanese it would probably be next to impossible to get a Japanese citizenship, harder than most countries at least, so I wouldn’t consider citizenship a very viable option.

Basically in an effort to cut costs, managers were tasked with eeking out as much productivity from each wage slave as possible.
