Why did live streaming become the predominant format for people playing games on the internet? What happened to Game Grumps or Chuggaconroy style daily pre recorded uploads?

I guess it’s not too off topic
Parasocial relationships are stronger with live audiences it’s why tabloids and live concerts exist you feel more connected to the person if you can see them in real time

Streams are just an extremely close version of that as they can interact directly with more people and those former content makers all either retired or transitioned to live formats

Prerecorded still exists and several high profile creators still use it. Streaming just has some advantages (audience interaction, don't need to edit the video, can just upload the vod for more views) that make it more appealing. It's also just more appealing to people whose views aren't personality driven like competitive players and speedrunners.

I'd assume people stopped using gameplays as entertainment alone and now use livestreaming as an opportunity to stay connected. Content creators specially realized that donations are way more profitable than a regular upload schedule + partners, not to mention how restrictive youtube and twitch have gotten with their restrictions it makes more and more sense to switch from that past model of mass prerecorded uploads, in fact vtubers had the same thing happen which is why giants like Kaguya Luna or Mirai Akari dropped off and Hololive/Nijisanji dominate the JP market.
tldr: it doesn't mean the public that enjoyed recorded clips disappeared, but rather the streaming model has increased in popularity.
Also this is the vtuber board retard.

Streaming takes less effort. Shitty editing in OBS is excused because they're live.

Editing is hard, and when you livestream you can have more low energy moments compared to a 10-20 minute video where you have to be high energy for the entire time. Back in 2015-2017 a lot of youtubers actually had a really difficult time trying to livestream on twitch because they would try and be "on" for as long as possible and their energy levels would burn out after 40-50 minutes of streaming; a lot of them learned the hard way that they had to treat their stream as a marathon race and less of a 100 meter dash race. During this time twitch streamers were uploading highlights of their streams to YouTube and were making a huge success since people who weren't on twitch would find them through the algorithm, watch their 10 minute video, give their channel adsense money and then in the long term later convert them to a twitch viewer.

It's why indie chuubas who only stream are fucking brain dead. They need to do 1 hour of editing for each hour of streaming they do because no new viewer is going to watch an 6 hour VOD that has 200 views, but they might watch a 10 minute video of that VOD that shows off your best moments.

let's plays have always just been the beta version of live streaming
that's why they're called "let's plays", they're meant to make the audience feel included and attached to the personalities

Let's plays is a relic. Most of let's plays are scripted and most of prolific youtubers back then script their gameplay even if its a multiplayer game like BF4 or ARMA (LevelCap, PonyLion etc). We're talking specifically voice over let's plays that entertain viewers. Let's Plays either moved to livestreaming, and if they can't handle live audience, they'll turn to make game reviews or "video essays" about videogames. The streamers can continue youtubing by simply chopping their VODs into highlight reels.

Not to mention Single Player games were dying in 2011-2013, and streaming multiplayer on Twitch brought a new type of crowd.
The only Multiplayer let's plays that are viable today are Rust/DayZ, where things happen organically with proximity VC. Or Minecraft SMP/SP like Hermitcraft. Scripted content like Yogscast content would still work but writing machinimas/lore is a lost form of art nowadays.

Horror games can work too, but that genre is also on its way out since people are craving for 4th wall breaking and won't settle for jumpscares (DDLC, games with ARG). It's just that the current audience crave for social interactions rather than caring about content. They won't settle for simple likes and comment replies, they want personal convo.

But why do all this, when some leech can just download the VODs and compile them in one nice 10 minute video, name the channel "BEST Funny Apex Moments" and get 500k subs overnight? Back then Shroud did try doing this by himself and taking down clip channels and created monopoly of his VODs, realizing its just too much work to edit all the clips, so he just outsource that shit and accept leech will leech.

I remember when EA said this and people thought we'd never get another big budget single player game but now every multiplayer game is a massive fuck up disappointment and the single player games are great

>> No.1295957

if anyone's a streamer here, how do y'all keep track of moments to clip from a 2 hour + stream? if you don't have viewers who can clip things for you by just shouting "chat, clip that!" and you need to do it yourself.

There's a vtuber that's doing a let's play of P4G, it's pretty neat
