Here's the original template for those, I use inkscape but illustrator should work. Also slightly tweaked the tail shadow on the first frame because it felt too acute, not a big difference though.

I heavily lean into minimalist designs because you wont be able to see them at 50x50
However there is a second trend of using them as streamlabs alerts so pixelated wigglies no longer meet the minimal requirements.
Nen from Tsunderia is literally wigglytubing so very detailed models have other uses.

The best approach is to do both: a simplified design for the emote, and a larger, more detailed ones for art purposes.

I haven't seen one, and there's many to go on my list before she pops up, so definitely feel free. Decals have to be added each frame and manually placed, yes. Rotation works best for stuff that needs to remain constant sized, and Perspective is my go-to for stuff that gets warped as the body shape changes.

while still a work in progress here is the fruits of todays not a lot of labor. i figure people can use this version of the psd to start on new fancier wigglies. its not done and not organized enough to sate my tism, but its something

as with the previous version, each frame has its own folder, and in each folder each body part is seprated by layers.
In csp you would go to edit - tonal correction - hue saturation luminosity and you can change the color cleanly. not sure how it is in other programs but it should be similar
extra details can be added on a new top layer in each folder.

How do you think it's worth colouring the wiggly?

My avatar is a blonde guy in a blue hat, red scarf, blue clothes, all under a labcoat.
Currently, wiggly is Yellow head (for hair), red frill (for scarf), blue body (for clothes). I then shooped in the hat frame-by-fame. It's... a bit shit, if I'm honest, but it means I can actually make use of the animated slot.

Any suggestions, or does a three-colour body work?

I think the colors as you have them look okay though the hat could do with some work. Clean up the fuzz on the edges, squeeze more of it into frame, and the color of it kind of clashes with the rest, the movement of it is okay though.
What works for the body just depends on the design. Multiple colors on the body can be fine in general, plenty of good examples of that in this thread, but simple works well too and it's not like wigglies need to be a perfect representation of the original design.

Three color works nicely for an emote but you might want to do something more complicated if you plan to wigglytube.
Also, change the color of the nose to match the color scheme, I suggest using the color of the scarf.

This is mostly a placeholder. I've been making wigglies for friends (definitely not just as practice) to get used to it, and they're starting to get better. My first ones were absolutely terrible.

It's ok, your first batch usually ends up being more valuable than later editions since they go up first in the wigglychain.

What, in everyone's opinion, makes a good wiggly? Should it just be similar colours to the chuuba, direct colours and one aspect of the design (hat, hair, clothing)? How exact should be the clothes be - Letania's has the whole outfit, but some don't have anything, just colour match the coat

The criteria shouldn't be how detailed it is, after all, most of those are lost once they turn into emotes.
There are two things that make a good wiggly:

1) How recognizable it is
People who have not seen the chuuba should be able to recognize the vtuber after seeing the wiggly.
2) How creative it is
The sad truth is that now that templates are available anyone can recolor a wiggly. What makes your wiggly stand out from the rest?

One of my favorite wigglies is this one >>13233635 because it does something outside the norm while showing the person actually knows something about the chuuba he made it for. Be it a small reference >>13331124 or a radical edit >>13301859 the important part is that one thing you did to show you actually care for the person you made it for.

As high effort as the sloth wiggly might be, I don't believe it became a great wiggly until the idea to make it move at 1/3 the speed was added.
Ultimately the objective of the wiggly should be to get a smile out of the person you made it for.
Wigglycrafters should not focus on many small details to reproduce the chuuba design identically, but on that one big thing that will make it stand out from the rest.
Taho wigglies are the greatest wigglies not because of how similar they are to the models but because of the extra stuff he added and that must have been a pain in the ass to do.

I've gotten too greedy with my designs, I think. I figured out how to "do a thing", then I want to apply that thing to all the next wigglies where it can, and all of the sudden they get a little... wild, compared to the base wiggly.
In short, I think >>13360763 has the right of it. I'm rather fond of how the Caleb turned out even if it's basic in design, if only because of the eyebags and bottle of gin. I also like how the Elliott one turned out, even if I have to fight back the urge to v2 it with more design flourishes now that I have more drawing tools in my belt.
