HoloX's trying to keep their hype up and attract new fans / viewers. As someone who aren't super invested in HoloX yet, even if I'm not (yet) interested in SC'ing or joining their membership in the future, those shorts will still keep myself relatively hooked to keep checking them out.
On the other hand, Ethyria was dumb to try to rein in, as you put it, *donators*. Not fans, donators. Most people aren't donators until they are really interested in a VTuber - that's why all SC thanking streams, be it Holo or Niji, EN or JP, including those from SC monsters, tend to get significantly less viewers than normal streams. Normal fans are simply not interested in those streams. Thus, what Ethyria did didn't really help them expanding their fanbase or attract potential fans - and that showed clearly in their numbers.
Look at what I've just written and think about it - do you still consider what HoloX and Ethyria did the same (or even similar)?
