That's not cautious, that's outright paranoid. Even most paranoids would probably just make sure they archive the source where they got the permission from and make sure it belongs to who it claims to belong to (that's a smart thing to do anyway) and leave it at that level of digging. Entrapment is a known legal topic. You can get just as entrapped by getting permission from a "rogue employee" and in both cases I doubt it's gonna work out for the plaintiff in court.
