Just read https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/learn/guide.html , and never step in /jp/, because everything good and worthwhile from there is on that website, while some retards in /djt/ will give you worse advice and you are too unknowledgeable in Japanese to figure what is bad and what is good advice. Don't step there and just use the website, it has everything.

I’m not OP and I believe its possible. I have a friend who learned how to understand vtubers in roughly half a year with a mixture of grammar books, flashcards, turbo autism, and watching vtubers for hours nonstop.
Whether or not he could chat with locals if you dropped him in the middle of Tokyo, I don’t know. But the dude can understand what vtubers are saying, at least.

Translated clips will never be able to catch all of the good stuff. You can cope with "all the worthwhile stuff will be translated", but there are several examples of that not being true.
Even if we imagine that was true, the missing gaps make your enjoyment of them so shallow compared to what you get when you know the language. Posting rrats on /vt/ is how EOPs compensate for missing out on the banter, fanart, and jp memes that make this hobby unique.

>they legit talk like cavemen
YMMV

This. Kanji is just rote memorisation. Parsing spoken Japanese in real time is a much steeper learning curve, especially since the grammar is so different to western languages.

>> No.16205028

You're unicornally overthinking it. The other anon was right, it's ooga booga speak. Just dumb yourself down and be a fecetious lying piece of shit and Japanese is actually fun. It's all about crafting your words simply but also poetically to hide the true meaning so as to remain polite to others.

Language is an art.

It's definitely possible, but I've come to the conclusion that it will not be easy like OP is claiming for a long time. Even if your grammar knowledge is good, and you can always keep up with the pace (which you can't), there will always be conversation subjects where you understand almost nothing. You can only really reduce how often that happens.
It is fairly easy to learn enough to enjoy streams though.

Besides, just knowing japanese will open up opportunities to actually use it. Trust me.

Since you're in this board learning a language is the least of your time wasters.

Most of my visual media consumption is VTubers and anime. Most of the games I play are Japanese VNs and H-games. Most of the things I read are manga or shitty LNs with piss-poor translations. How would I not be using Japanese?

unless you're surrounded by japanese native speakers, you need to find an alternate way to hear a large amount of japanese speech. hearing the grammar and vocabulary you're learning in actual, spoken japanese is the best way to understand it. of course, you need a pretty solid foundation in japanese before this starts being helpful.
obviously you arent just watching anime; you look up words you dont know or phrases you dont understand as you go to get a feel for how they're used, etc.
there are other ways to get that sort of exposure, but anime and tv are very convenient in that the voice actors generally speak very clearly, and you have easy access to subtitles so you can look up the things you dont understand.

>> No.16209507

>>16205156
I use it every fucking day for my hobbies, and it's extremely useful to me. Grinding the language has been one of the best choices of my life once I decided to consume Japanese media and entertainment.
You can argue that it doesn't really open up any realistic job opportunities, but that doesn't mean it's not useful if it improves the experience you have with what you enjoy.
People learn very specific jargon that can rarely be applied to their occupation if their hobbies are cars, trains, and music. They learn very specific reflexes that can rarely be applied if their hobbies are video games or sportsball. But they learn all of those because it enriches their time spent with their hobby
Knowing Japanese will enrich your time watching Japanese vtubers and cartoons, reading manga/WN/LN/VNs, and browsing twitter/5ch.

Basic stuff is pretty easy to learn.I only get lost sometimes during zatsudans or like when Marine speaks really fast I cant even catch half of the things she's saying. Still, I'm not planning to keep doing JP reps since trilingual, and my native language, english in russian are already making a mess in my head when I'm trying to think and form sentences
>>16207648
This is your typical dumb EOP justifying not learning any other language.

>> No.16209883

I lack motivation to learn japanese. Frankly, as someone who's not a language enthusiast, knowing 2 languages is already an accomplishment. Yes, it wouldn't hurt to learn another one, but as someone who has zero interest in visiting japan and who doesn't watch anime it's almost entirely useless to me. I admit that not needing to rely on translations would be nice, but the effort it takes isn't worth it for that purpose alone.
