20086251 No.20086251 [Reply] [Original]

Companies that sell alcohol know that most of their biggest sales aren't to people who only drink occasionally. Their biggest clients are alcoholics. Vtubing as a business revolves around monetizing parasocial relationships. They biggest revenue isn't from the (relatively) well adjusted people who only tunes in every now and then and maybe watches a few ad breaks. Their biggest revenue is from the people throwing down money right and left on everything from donations to subs to superchats to merchandise. Which is to say it's for people who are so socially unhealthy that a pay to play parasocial relationship with an anime girl on screen is going to suck them in. Like anyone sucked into a habit they're probably spending money that they can't afford to spend trying to get the attention of anime girls.

As much fun as vtubers are, is this shit ethical?

I haven't talked to a female that isn't related to me or for work in 16 years and I have never donated a dime despite watching thousands of hours of vtuber streams.

who cares im not a retard so it doesnt effect me. same with alcohol. if you're dumb enough to waste your life drinking yourself to death, or trying to get an anime girls attention with your wallet when you could just buy a prostitute then that's your fault

You have to extend this question to streaming in its entirety, as it's inherently parasocial.

it's as ethical as the fans lets decide honey... shitty as they are, the world needs unethical stuff as well. and this is way better ethically than many other things. one easily comparable industry are twitch thots.

It's about as unethical as gacha, so yes, it is unethical.
The real question is why we should care about the retards that are stupid enough to waste their money on unhealthy forms of entertainment.

>> No.20091135

Streaming as a whole is unethical. Twitch has site mechanics where you are pressured into donating or subbing to get exclusive emotes. Higher tiers of membership would not be an option if these corporations were worried about the well being of the userbase.

Its extremely ethical, stealing money from depressed losers should be encouraged by our society.

The word 'parasocial' has been warped to mean 'you fervently believe this streamer is your friend/gf' when for starters I'd wager almost nobody actually believes that for real, they just like someone and treats them like an interactive form of an anime waifu, that's the big appeal of vtubers really. They don't all have to be waifus, but some are. Overall 'parasocial' is a very broad term that simply means the other person is unaware of you. You can be parasocial for actors, sports teams etc, it's literally anyone you like and think of in deeper dimensions than you would a stranger but without them knowing you at all.

If anything, vtubers are slightly piercing the actual complete wall of parasocial that would come from say having a crush on on actor where they are completely ignorant of your existence, in that they do talk to chat as a kind of homogenous entity and do react with the audience and are often shaped by it collectively.

At the end of the day I think a large part of the monetization of vtubers isn't actually "hurr parasocial" it's because it's just a group/herd mentality, the "everyone's doing it" kind of thing encouraging individuals to become more uninhibited with their feelings (and wallets). When Mori's SCs first opened up and she reacted strongly to them people had fucking 'contests' trying to out-donate each other based on country etc. It was nuts. There are also some people to whom SC money amounts are truly insignificant and if they're bored/interested enough they'll throw 50-100 around like it's nothing - the couple oil barons out there normalize the perception of yes this really can happen, and helps build the peer environment expectations. It then gets sustained by others for whom 50 would actually be a lot but they just don't actually say that because they wanna be cool like the oil barons, etc.

Tons of indies are like that, most of them actually because they didn't have expectations of going into this for money (some are pure tryhard shitters trying to make this their 'career' from the start however like bao).

The thing is, if indies start to get a flow of money coming in and this does actually become their main income source, they may switch gears to try to more carefully maintain their image to make sure this flow doesn't cut suddenly because it's actually important now how they act/present themselves. I'd analogize it to how if you were working at McDonald's as a teen, you probably didn't actually give a shit about that as a job and just wanted some pocket money to buy an Xbox or GPU or something with. If you make it into a big important company and start making six figs, you suddenly give a shit and do whatever it takes to hold the job.

This argument could be used for any and all streamers. If you’re retarded enough to fall down the parasocial relationship rabbit hole then it’s on you. My oshi is Marine and I haven’t given her a penny of my own while still being able to watch all her streams. I don’t give a single fuck about being a member either. Also vtubers != Hololive. Holos are larping as idols so they’re expected to be cranking the lovey-dovey bullshit to a maximum. The NijiEN girls, while still having simps, don’t do it nearly as much. Vshojo have stopped pretending. Vtubers are women on the internet so there’s no way for them to never have simps no matter what they do.

>>20105392
I think most of the big vtubers wouldn’t be doing it if they didn’t have fun with it anymore. Most have made their money already and could move on to other things, or their content would suffer if they didn’t like what they were doing (See shion a few months back, Sana, etc.).

>> No.20116627

>>20086251
Feels like you're talking about GFE and not really about vtubing. In that case, the girls would obviously disagree since it's soooo profitable for it to not be true... but no. It's not ethical.
Tricking people into thinking it's in any way normal to give money to make-believe girlfriend content is not okay. That shit is not normal nor necessary at any point no matter how messed up your life is. Worst part is, they know this doesn't really help your situation (assuming you're fucked up enough to consume this crap) yet they still do it.
