Don't most people who learn another language is because of interest in their entertainment? You have to hold an interest first to want to learn another language to begin with. Even broader business opportunities can be seen as an interest. Isn't that why English is the most spoken language in the world so other countries could enjoy our classic entertainment (and hopefully not the current terrible ideological driven ones) without having to rely on subtitles? I could be wrong on that since I don't often look at statistics on languages learned but English and Chinese are usually the top ones learned at least as a second language.

Correct. There is a core dozen or so kanji that get used frequently enough that they're taught in schools. The average person only really knows those as well as any Kanji that show up in their names and often only the specific reading of it, not any others..
This is why if you look around you'll occasionally see a kanji written then have its hiragana spelling in subscript above it. I've also noticed that in places where tourism is frequent romaji is used for almost everything.
