What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

and that amount numbers in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions if you really want to get technical on the amount of Twitch viewers. Vtubers have barely started to tap into the larger portion of Twitch this year.

Even if we're ONLY talking about viewers who specifically want to watch vtubers (despite the crossover between IRL viewers and Vtubers getting bigger and bigger), the number is still growing. 3 years ago the biggest chuubas peaked at 2k, the next year that doubled, and this year it's doubled again. You act like there's only a few hundred viewers out there when in reality there's as many as you as a content creator can reach even if we're ONLY talking people who are already interested in chuubas.

Iron Mouse, Veibae, and Snuffy already share viewership with a lot of those big streamers, and a lot of those big streamers have viewers that watch Vtubers.

Again, vtubing isn't some small niche "deep weeb" only hobby any more. I know it's hard to believe but as someone that doesn't only watch Vtubers, I see it a lot. Iron Mouse has almost 9k CCV so you can't tell me this is some niche ELITE WEEB ONLY hobby any more. That's more than some people who have streamed on Twitch SUCCESSFULLY for 6+ years and are much bigger names, yet you've got chuubas coming up and matching and even beating their numbers despite just taking off a couple of years ago.

Look I'm not trying to call you out but you don't seem to know a lot about Twitch. On average (outside of special events), no single streamer has 100k CCV. You've got a few that hover in the 70k, but that's about peak as far as pure average goes.

I don't really understand your argument, they still share a large and ever-growing portion of those audience with this demographic they'll supposedly "never get" because they're targeting a "completely different audience". All the top chuubas have great crossover with some of the top streamers like Asmongold, XQC, etc especially Veibae with how closer she is to "twitch culture" than the rest of them and Sodapoppin isn't even her biggest audience similarity.

If you have content that appeals to that demographic, they'll watch. You're living in 2019 and need to get out of the bubble.

>>25950004
My point is that between the two routes in this discussion that still involve Vtubing, you're picking the more difficult one that likely won't pay off whatsoever instead of the normal one that's got a lot better chance, because now you have to do voice training and on top of that still be entertaining while actively offputting a large portion of your potential audience.

Short term shilling is fine, it'll get you to like 3ccv (see: Azu)
Long term is a complete fucking waste, you'll just have a very very slow revolving door of new people checking you out and the earlier viewers leaving so you never actually grow (see: Kaiser).
Once you've posted 2 or 3 stream links here pretty much everyone on /asp/ has seen you and decided whether or not they're going to watch you. Effort should then be diverted into getting NON-/here/ viewers. You know, from those marketing reps that males absolutely refuse to do.

>> No.25961813

>>25961542
I'm not a fan of shilling at all because I think no matter who it is, it ruins your expectations and clouds your judgement. You shill here and you get a handful of viewers sure, but they aren't "real" viewers you attracted with your content, your wit, your personality. They're other aspies who watch you purely because you are "one of them", which is what Azu's 6 CCV is. None are real viewers he's attracted on his own, nor are the viewers of a majority of people here. it makes people think they're doing well and they get complacent and nothing you say can make them realize it because they're "inclining" and anyone that says otherwise just looks bitter or like they're trying to hate.

I know the guy get's shit on constantly, but he's really the best example. If anyone were scrolling through (or were raided into, for example) and saw a chuuba like alto, azu, thaum, etc they'd close the tab immediately and never look back. They watch them now because they're on the same 4chan board, that's it.

Even with viewers aside, /wvt/'s network of chuubas is a hell of a lot bigger and with all due respect to /asp/ies, even from the get-go you could see the amount of effort they put in compared to most of the /asp/ies. Callie never just "hit live" to fuck all nobody for months at a time with zero personality to her content. She had her own viewers within a month. A lot of /wvt/ chuubas support one another like aspies try to, the difference is most of them seem to have significantly more drive, personality, and just overall skill than most /asp/ies seem to even in their earlier days and that's coming from someone who's got a founders badge in multiple /wvt/ chuubas channels. A lot of /wvt/ chuubas started with a hell of a lot more....everything than the last gens of /asp/ did, and personality is definitely one of them.

this is just factually false we've seen a couple of collabs and more that are probably planned that we don't know about
keep in mind that a lot of /asp/ies are fresh and just starting and a lot of people usually try to find their footing in streaming before jumping into collabs

You can't deny how low the bar is compared to previous aspies. Yes, there's a few collabs but they just feel like a couple of people who happen to be streaming the same game with zero thoughts of anything else. There's more to collabs than just playing some game you never plan to play together again when you're talking people that stream together with the intent to actually make decent content
>keep in mind that a lot of /asp/ies are fresh and just starting
They really aren't "fresh" by any stretch not these days. Azu has been going for months now. Also and the crocodile babi? Last year. Eraxs and Kaiser? Hundreds of hours streamed. That tanuki or whatever he is? January.

That's just a handful of them, but compare what they've done, not even just their CCV, with what the /wvt/ chuubas did in their first 3 or 4 months. Most /asp/ies barely even seem to stream. Even spacer with all his autism and a PNG was doing better in his first few months.

>> No.25963919

Idk why you were fixated on the collabs portion but I still digress. Lurk the Discord and check schedules, you'll find a lack of interest in collabs. Obviously idk what goes on in peoples DMs but going off the info available reinforces this disinterest.
Deep down though everyone's interested in collabs so long as it's with a 3view.
Fyi, nobody's fresh here. If that's any indication it just makes them look worse. Like the anon I replied to most /wvt/ hit the ground running and don't stop no matter how "fresh" they are. It just sounds like copium at this point.

Even when it was a niche hobby Kamochiru was still charging pretty high prices, chuuba work just takes a lot more than a standard commission or even actual corporate work. There were always expensive artists, those people were just requested enough that they included work for content creators in their portfolio. The 3x price thing doesn't apply to chuuba models anyway ,it's already factored in the price.

Even before this was a hobby thought doable by your average joe, corporations were already paying tens of thousands of dollars just to produce a single chuuba, so I don't know why it's some strange, crazy revelation that those same artists who were doing work for studio, companies, etc are now willing to do work with anyone. The hobbyists create this niche, companies did. Those companies paid people a lot of money to create interest in this hobby.

Yes, those things aren't mutually exclusive, in fact they're very connected. ANY chuuba that does well likely either has or has had extensive social experience, hobbies, special interests, etc. You don't just pick it up after 6 months of streaming to nobody. The myth of the "loner weeb that suddenly makes it big" is fucking bullshit. All the top chuubas are a lot closer to normal than they are whatever you'd call yourself. This is content creation. Newsflash, but popular and in-demand artists charge a lot of money for their work. It's never not been this way, you're only just now noticing because it involves something you've taken interest in. Why are you so pressed, all you have to do is not pay for it and let the bigger creators or just people with bigger wallets pay for it.

Most of them were hobbyists with drive, interests, and direction. A lot of them knew what they wanted to do or had ideas and did them. They were generally just more interesting as people and a lot of the more recent aspies are just uninteresting as people. Bloom can sing (not actually a fan of his singing but people says its good), is interested in retro games and their history. Callie has a lot of weird trailer trash stories from her life and is just the right amount of quirky to not be annoying. Nelson is pretty funny when he's got someone with him and plays off of others fairly well and also has pretty clear interests whereas nothing really stands out about many of the aspies

How, exactly? Their art isn't suddenly less valuable nor does it take less effort just because the chuuba is small. The software comparison doesn't make much sense because it's still just the same data, nothing is new or changed. This person has to put the same amount of work into a popular chuuba's model as they do into some randos and in all honesty their work for smaller people has yielded much better designs in my opinion. There's nothing "dangerous" about it. You either have the money or you don't.

He didn't "miss out" on 6k, he chargers 6k so that he has the luxury of turning people away. 6k as one commission as opposed to 6k as three 2k commissions means less work because it's one piece as opposed to 3 that take the same amount of time, and less people to deal with. You just want an artist that does character design commissions. "character designer" will probably pop up a whole host of people that do general character design from anything to cartoons to comics. Twitter sucks as far as having any decent search functions, so what I've always done is search what I want and add the word "commission" to it. Problem is you often end up scrolling through a lot of furries, but something like this will usually yield some decent artists if you're willing to put in the bullshit footwork to drudge through it.

hooking people from raids can be difficult. i know saying just RNG isn't helpful so let me put it a different way. viewers from a streamer similar to you in content or tone are more likely to stick around. i sometimes get big raids were less than a tenth of them stick by at the end, and some where the retention is far better.
dead air is kind of an iffy. you should try to keep conversation with yourself at a steady pace, but you don't need a million words a minute.
my best advice right now is to practice having a conversation with yourself. learn to talk without needing to be prompted by an audience, it's one of the best starting blocks i can recommend.

>>25975810
making friends helps, but that's kind of vague. you definitely need to get your name out there and getting friends helps. you don't have to be personal buddies, but sometimes those raids early on help. i tried to show up to other people's chats and interact with them on twitter. i don't mind smaller vtubers following me-- what i hate is when they follow but dont interact at all. if you are just wanting to lurk and observe someone's content without being seen that's one thing. but i hate the ones who follow every v-tuber they can and then wonder why no one shows up. comment on people's posts, go to their streams, make OC content. don't comment on every single post of course, but giving engagement is important. those smaller vtubers that give me some engagement end up getting a raid from me when i see them online, because i try to raid down when i can!
otherwise you need to play a good game of marketing yourself on twitter, using art or video creation and hashtags. i'm no good at that unfortunately but i do try.

i know the 'make friends' thing is tiring to hear all the time, so i tried to make it a bit more specific. also always raid! even if it's just you! idc if you come in with one viewer, the important thing is that it gets you on my radar and i try to give you a follow back. it depends on each chuuba of course but i try to thank raiders by raiding them back in the future! maybe dont go into nyanners stream with one person, but if they are 50 and below you should be more than fine.

i guess the summary of it is to get on people's radars-- either viewer or other chuubas. viewers mean making content outside of streams, chuubas means being friendly and interactive. it's okay to be shy, it's a matter or working through it with baby steps if needed. i try to be very friendly to new chuubas and tyr to show up and host their streams when possible.

No. Most of my streams are around 10-15 ccv and almost all my vods make it to 200 views in the next few hours, so there is no indication that the stream view count had any impact. What's the point on showing both if it's not in separate stats?

Artists can reject your order for whatever reason they want. But if they do reject your order, or you cancel your order, or your card is declined; then Skeb increases the 'suggested amount'.
My first skeb got declined by my bank due to it being suspicious activity. Went back to check the page, and it's gone up 500yen.

If you offer above the suggested, it'll increase from that amount.

what the fuck is wrong with you? art is the only industry where customers are so retarded that they are desperate to overpay

I wasn't really talking about raids, i don't get raided in the first place, but i get the general gist of it. I'm used to talking to myself so that's not a problem, but i should probably pick my topics better or generally just need to keep trying to reach out to people. Sucks i can't watch most /asp/ies or /wvt/ chuubas because they all start at like 3am my time and I'll never be able to get raided by them either because I can't stream at like 7am just to fish for raids and that's also kinda bad taste.

Thank you for your advice though.

Wait... This system is extremely weird. Can the artist put it back down to the previous recommended amount?

That's just something you see. Check their page in a new browser, or incognito. Just one with no cookies.
It's like looking at hotel/flight/concert tickets. Remove the cookies and tracking trail.

Holy shit you're right. Opened incognito and it's 500 again. It's that how things work there? This happening with a 500 piece isn't 'really' surprising to me but what about more expensive ones, 7000 or even 10000? Are you expected to pay more than what's "recommended"?

If you can't get raids because of your timezone try the 'Waiting Room' strategy. Become friends with streamers you can raid into so their viewers watch you before watching their favorite streamer. It sounds a bit cynical but it's fine if you do it with people you genuinely get along with.

It goes based on the artist's prior accepted work, and what you've offered. So the ones with super high prices only tend to accept the super high offers.

>> No.25977735

>>25977493
Ohh interesting, good to know. I would've been extremely confused if it happened to me in the future. I guess Skeb does this as a way to tell you "maybe the artist will do it for a higher price"?

Kinda backwards, considering I can't raid them without viewers in the first place, but it makes sense. Now i only need to learn how to make friends and I'm set.

i don't care when people raid in as a party of one. it shows that they wanted to come to my stream, which is a sweet gesture. and everyone starts somewhere.

The only difference I have when I get a particularly small raid, like 1 or 2 people, is I just ask them how the stream went and what they were doing. If it's a decent size I say "hey X thanks for the raid" and then ask the same.

However, I am not all people. Some people will be really fucking rude if you raid them with single digit numbers. Stay within your league so you don't get on someone with a huge ego's nerves.

>> No.25978388

I set my arbitrary raid minimum to like 7 viewers, that's what i have at the end of every 10th stream or so, it's counter-productive but i don't want to just draw attention to myself. If i can't even offer a little bit of a trade, i'm not gonna do it. If i was a new streamer maybe, but i'm a chronically NGMI i shouldn't be needing help in the first place.

it's not rude to ignore someone that raids with just themselves. many do it for attention and if you give them that special attention you are basically telling your viewers that you value that attention whore more than them

I just did a bit of vanity search and found out someone has been impersonating/falseflagging me in previous /asp/ and /wvt/ threads. :/

found out the best way to work on the model is to start with the bigger, single parts and then move on to the parts that need the most separation and detail. Sounds really obvious but I am really dumb so I am just realizing.
