The answer is that you need to have good character designs. 80% of the audience of anything are idiots who decide things on visual first impression.

Hololive - for whatever reason - have a weirdly good record for this. The designs Korone, Marine, Pekora & Gura are downright iconic. (An argument could be made for Watson, if she'd had a better fitting personality)

Rules of iconism:

1. Not too complicated
2. Easy to scale down into simplified (eg, SD) form.
3. Maximum of two dominant colors (other colors only being used for details).
4. Character traits identifable at first glance.
5. (The hardest one). Must be somehow original or have some striking aspect of it to gain first attention.

None of Nijisanji's designs really match this. Most are overcomplicated minus the ones that are following obvious archetypes (JK).

Ironically, this is also the problem with Holostars. Whoever makes the female design decisions in Hololive, is clearly a different person than in Holostars and it's why they won't succeed unless they come up with an appealing male design ethos.

You may not like this reality, but you need to accomodate the lowest-common denominator before you can expect people to be invested enough in things like the chuba's personalities etc. First impressions matter.

Now I'm going to go back to not watching Nijisanji.
