If the way you want to express yourself on-stream is as a certain character then by all means.
But if you just want an avatar because you're not comfortable being on camera, that's completely fine.
Or if you choose to be a vtuber to achieve a cohesive aesthetic on-stream, or to have a mascot character, go for it.
