I favor strong kayfabe. Strong separation from the character is the best for both the streamer and the audience.
Although it doesn't mean I don't enjoy streamers who just stream as themselves, I believe with time "becoming a character" is inevitable: it start as a joke, then it becomes a meme, then newcomers walk in expecting that, then your character begins to spilt from your true self.
It is better if this happens on your own terms.

there's a 3D vtuber named GreatMoonAroma who's entire model overly exaggerates their expressions. it takes the idea of face-cam streaming with a virtual avatar to the extreme by reaching far into those cartoony expressions. instead of the limited range of motion that Live2Ds have. pic related.

by going virtual, you can have access to all those expressions. that's what you can add. panicking and freaking out can be conveyed better, being sad and crying can be done better. that's what you can add in terms of value. but just having a "scary" model on its own doesn't do anything.
