The girls in HoloEN got a big initial audience because they’re in Hololive. Some of them, like Gura and Fauna, know this and are working with the gift they have. Others, like Mori and Ame, probably think that it’s been two years and surely people are watching them for them now. So I suspect they thought they knew their audience more than they did and underestimated the effect of saying shit like that. I think the real effect was in stripping away the veneer of the Holo brand appeal, which has much longer term effects than just driving away unicorns.

The longer term effect is showing HoloEN is more EN than Holo. In HoloJP, they can collab with males too, and some of them do. It’s just that the girls legitimately don’t want to for a number of reasons, including partially not wanting to filter unicorns but also because they don’t feel like their content would be enhanced by it. And the ones who do collab with males, like Fubuki, don’t overdo it, because they know people who watch vtubers don’t like that shit.
In my view, the real effect of this shitshow is proving that a bunch of the HoloEN girls don’t get that. They have no idea what the whole appeal of their content is. The fact that Mori wanted to “include” Stars as if Stars is PART of Hololive and not a partner branch basically sealed that.
So now, HoloEN is just another EN corpo, with a reputation it didn’t earn and is fading away. Afaik, they still have some power in being the biggest, but their appeal from being Hololive is gone/going away, and it really does feel more and more like all those subs are empty subs.

I’ve actually thought about this and whether that’ll be the case. It’s what a lot of anons say, but that just didn’t feel correct to me. Part of it is that I literally watched Kizuna Ai in December 2016, yet still, the first place I went to after migrating from HoloEN was Phase Connect.
I think the problems with your theory are this: A.) People watched HoloJP because they had no choice. It’s much harder to psychologically tell yourself to go to JP when there are so many EN options that aren’t Hololive and aren’t random 2views nobody gives a shit about. B.) Much of the reason people started watching Hololive in the first place was through clips. A lot of the big clip channels now focus on EN chuubas. C.) HoloEN doesn’t do that much collabs with JP, so it’s not easy for JP girls to show up in the recommendeds of an EN watcher unless they already watch the JP girls too. And that leads to the last point, D.) A lot of vtubers like Filian and Punkalopi seem to be getting new viewers from zoomers who didn’t give a shit about JP, and they’ll probably grow in the algorithm and crowd out JP even further for English-speaking audiences.
None of what I just listed makes it impossible for someone to go back to JP. But you have to actively want to do it and be determined to do it and not be willing to get distracted by other options. I’m trying to go back to JP but I’m mentally preparing myself first because the algorithm is still spitting out random EN shit because I watch Phase too.
