I think this is too simple, there are specific charm points Shimada has that really hit on a deeper level than just "tomboy". She's close enough to Tomo-chan to self-insert, but really it's all her particular interests, tastes, mannerisms, her experiences and creativity and determination that put her on a level that made me really see her differently.
