What is /asp/?
A thread where we discuss our vtuber aspirations! Where it's agency-based or independent, let's help each other grow and make it as entertainers. Indies are welcome to join, but shill responsibly. Share what knowledge, insights, what works/doesn't work for you. Remember to do your research before providing personally identifying information to companies online!

FAQ:
Do I need an expensive, fully rigged Live2D model to be a vtuber?
No! You can always start out as a pngtuber!

Where can I learn how to Live2D rig avatars?
Check out Brian Tsui's (of Iron Vertex) YouTube channel!

Where can I find artists/riggers?
Skeb.jp, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, etc.

Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

What can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

Twitch or Youtube?
Multistream to both.

yeah, there are obviously male corpos like kuzuha and kanae who are very successful but there really aren't many huge examples in the western sphere
Ais Riale (https://www.twitch.tv/aisriale)) is the only one who I can think of that I believe started from scratch and has a big following as a male indie without a previously big roommate account.

>Stop being variety streamers and narrow down your content to appeal and attract a specific audience
>Figure out what your audience wants and provide content that fulfills their needs and brings value to their lives, whether that's: education (Woyde, Elliot, Arthur), entertainment* (Bat, Koopa, Vel) [*caveat that people doing this need to have extremely high charisma and personality to compete due to oversaturation], motivation (Kongou), relationships* (Nina) [*inherently all chuubas do this, but this is for the ones who excel in fostering a community and forming connections), or relatability* (Terumi) [*tenuous due to it being a subset between entertainment and relationships with the audience wanting to find someone to relate and vicariously live through].
>Make sure to know when the content that you're able to do should be delivered in multiple formats, like audio, video, writing, or livestreaming.
______
I don't know what that video says or what the hell /asp/ suggests, but the general rule of thumb to making the REAL kind of quality content is to make it evergreen. Good "evergreen" content
- skilled karaoke
- highlights and clips of exciting moments in games
- guides and how-tos
- relatable zatsudans
- educational and informational content
- reaction videos of dumb shit that's funny
Bad "evergreen" content
- transient memes
- amongus game play (fun in the moment, but no one will go through and watch the vod aside from clips)
- multiple hours of apex gameplay (any game really, only fun in the moment, not so much as a vod)
- "reviews" (video game and anime reviews only relevant for a year before the next one comes out)
basically, ask yourself, if you make this video, will someone want to watch it 1 month from now? 6 months? 1 year? for example, kurzgesagt and vinesauce are pretty much peak 'evergreen' informational content, tens of thousands of views across a multitude of videos even 4-5 years after they were originally uploaded. each day, someone falls down the bite-sized education rabbit hole and watches their videos.
on the other hand, how many people are going back and watching LinusTechTip reviews of the GPUs that were released in 2017?
_____
Making original music
Making original art
Singing
Modeling
Teaching
Sharing life experience
<instert showcase of any other skill here> Making anything original while streaming it could be considered type of evergreen content. Doubly so if you're doing something that people are largely unaware of. Like showing a pipeline of Blender shader creation. However this is only 50% of its power. The real thing comes into play when you make something both evergreen, entertaining AND unique. Think mario retardy/vidya wrestle/saltybet Think "Twitch plays <x>". _______
Extremely high quality post. For non-Vtuber charisma example timthetatman is someone to check out. He’s okay at fortnite but a fun character.
To clarify on the charisma part (personal opinion): you need to confidently and consistently embody your character. Saturation may see daunting, but if you prepare a character that has a lot of varied prompts to react to what is going on on stream, you’ll have a high chance of making it. This pastebin said it well about consistency: https://pastebin.com/eGzG2CFA
Or, another good way to do personality is to have fun and not be afraid to show it. Be excited about what you do, people like that.

Just be yourself, and also be kind when you interact with viewers or other chuubas. i.e. if you enter another chuuba's stream don't immediately make it about you or what you're up to, go with that chuuba's flow. As an example you join a stream and follow it, they thank you, you say hello, then you go with the chat's flow or if they ask you how you're doing just give a simple response, start a conversation. Things like that.

So I was >>4019244, and after giving it some thought, I think I'm actually gonna put some real effort in now, those first few streams with no real avatar (I don't think that keyboard/mouse tracker gimmick really counts even as PNGtubing) were pretty much me just testing the waters because I wanted to at least get some streaming reps in, even if they were small. But after that anon shared the little PNGtuber app at the end of the last thread and seeing just how easy that was I've spent the past few hours working on a proper stream setup. I've just got a couple of concerns:
Firstly, I'm just gonna use a set of overlay images someone shared for free on twitter, it should be fine and I quite like it imo, but when it comes to game streams, should I really use it even though it will show mostly blank space (empty chat and recent donation), I know you should always stream as if you have an audience which I think I'll be able to do vocally, but would a stream with almost 40% of the screen being dead space be better than if I were to just have the game full screen?
Second is my avatar, I basically just edited pic related and I think the end result is actually pretty endearing, the only thing is that if you reverse image search it, it all comes up with 4chan archives, is that going to be a bad thing for me in the long run or something? I suppose I could always bluff and say I just found the image randomly online.
Third is what to stream, I know I should find a niche, but I have a good concept for a game I want to play/why I want to play it, but I don't want to "waste" it on a potential 0 viewer stream, do I wait to have a couple of viewers to do it or do I do it anyway?
I'm gonna work hard at this from here on and now that I can officially call myself a PNGtuber I'm gonna try my best to start networking too maybe a link to the discord if anyone is generous enough?. Sorry for the blogpost, but I feel like this is the only way to properly get my head into this

i don't think anyone's really going to care that much to do a deep dive into your past. if you want to mess with the image search, spam the shit out of it on social media first, and then make a post here pretending to be some viewer. then you can point to the twitter/reddit/tumblr/etc. post as the first instance.

you can always play it again when you have viewers. it's not like the viewers who tuned into your 0 view stream will be all "hey, you played this before"

Alright so level with me anons. I have an education in acting, specifically theatre. I have some recording equipment (AT mic, mic stand, recording booth, audio interface). I've been really considering trying the Vtuber thing since I've always wanted to try and make online content, but valued my privacy enough to never try until now. My biggest issue is that 1) I have a pretty simple laptop for a computer, 2) I have no experience in streaming or content creation, and 3) I am very technologically stupid. I have confidence in my ability to play a character, but I'm concerned about if my computer and/or lack of streaming knowledge would be a hinderance. I'm also concerned about privacy. How much of a concern should it be for me to consider getting a VPN to stay extra safe, or what are the odds the model could glitch out and my real face could show on stream?

Considering Skeb prohibits all communication with the artist (at risk of being banned if they catch you messaging them) it's a terrible place to commission Live2D. There are also no possible revisions, you get what they send you and there is no way to get a refund even if the result doesn't match your request. Also, the artist gets all commercial rights of the work, so enjoy not having the rights of your own character.

Read their Terms of Service, they are some of the worst I've ever read, at least for the client.

I would advise using something else like Fiverr, or DMing the artist in social media.

Impostor syndrome is hitting really hard for me. I’m always nervous both on and off stream about my audience “realizing I’m a boring uninteresting fraud” and losing interest in me. My constantly lowering viewership only makes this feel more real.

I wonder if my novelty has run dry and I’m no longer interesting, or if I simply made a mistake during one of my previous streams that caused people to dislike me.

It’s nerve-wracking. I’ve even gotten anxious enough to question whether the few people I’ve made friends with like me. To the point of making things awkward.

If you have any advice I’d be really glad to hear it.

I have no interest in performing cat spaying myself or making it a part of my character in any way, it's just a topic for what I'm guessing would be an informational zatsudan type of thing. I was more concerned with Twitch's guidelines as to whether or not surgeries and other formal procedures would be considered gore and ban-worthy, even on a stream marked as mature. I was also wondering how much interest there would be for a research-oriented stream in the first place, as opposed to a streamer already knowing the information and taking on a role as a teacher.

that's always an issue, especially if your content remains relatively stagnant. why not try doing some impromptu guerilla streams of something completely unrelated to your core content. treat it more like experimenting and measure how people receive it.

there's also the issue of viewer bleed. you're gonna have to find a way to pull in fresh viewers, rather than trying to keep the ones you've already got. no idea how to help you there though, since i'm having trouble bringing new viewers in myself.

>friends
i'm honestly just giving everyone i interact with the benefit of the doubt. just be friendly with everyone, and if they try to use me, nip it in the bud and establish clear guidelines of what i will / won't do with them. no follow4follow bullshit, no shilling trades, etc. sure, everyone's in it to grow themselves, but that's expected of this field. but at the end of the day, you can still control how much you're giving to others.

>> No.4266338

You're most likely overthinking that your dwindling viewers is your fault. The truth of the matter is that you can't control if or when people watch your streams. You could have done everything perfectly and they still might leave through no fault of your own. And that's fine. You shouldn't tie your self-worth to a numbers game. that's a them problem. it's also some passive aggressive manipulative shit that you shouldn't tolerate. i'd be wary and sketch to see if they're trying to use it, and you called 'em out on it. then they try to backtrack and put the blame on you for "making it awkward"

of course, i have zero context in which this came up, but in my experience with abusive relationships, it's often used as a way to manipulate someone.

Keep pushing on man. What kind of things do you want to make? What is the show that you want to see exist on twitch thanks to you? You have to believe in that idea, irrespective of others liking it.
You will always have at least one fan, and that is you. And as long as that guy likes watching you, there will be others.

Doing some quickmath on my stats. My average amount of messages an hour ranges between 500 - 1000. But it wasn't always like this for me so I am mostly talking about "back then". The appeal of 2 view streamers is that you can make genuine connections with the streamer vs a large chat where you are drowned out by noise.. You do that by having individual conversations and moments with the streamer i.e. calling them out.

If someone didn't want to have the spotlight from the streamer they wouldn't be chatting. It's as simple as that. The moment they hit the enter key their words are for me to decide what to do with.

The thing is that I don't think the results speak. Kongou basically rocketed up in a short period of hype and has since flatlined for months. I respect him but his results aren't any better than the other dozens of vtubers who blow up on hype from debut then fail to have any staying power.
The thing about Slugma is that she's responsible about what she says and gives you actual information. I agree that it's not actionable but it's something reasonable to work with. People follow Kongou and then when they do decent we say it was thanks to his advice, and when they do shitty we say that they weren't good enough.

>> No.4271731

Ok gamers you want some basic actually actionable advice? Prepare for some reddit spacing for readability.

1) Be able to write down and articulate why someone would watch your streams over anyone else's. Then use that information to shape your content going forward.

2) maintain a consistent brand. Don’t be doing ear licking asmr one day then pro league of legends gameplay the next without expecting a huge drop in numbers.

3) watch your vods and write down the parts you like and the parts you can improve on as you watch. This is hard to do but the parts you don’t like will go down the more you do it.

4) watch other streamers and take notes of stuff they do that you think is good then emulate that in your own streams. Same with negative stuff but the opposite. Every single streamer has something you can learn from.

This is how I personally learned to “make valuable content” there’s more depth to this but essentially these are the steps.

>I agree that it's not actionable but it's something reasonable to work with.

I sort of agree, not to say that it is bad though, it's obviously useful and shouldn't be neglected, but it's something that most people would tell you anyway. It should be common sense that your stream won't be engaging if you don't speak, and of course if your throat gets dry after speaking you should have a glass of water by your side. But clearly though it still needs to be said though. Again, it's not bad advice, it's just not some sort of super secret growth tip, which is fine, because some people still need to hear the basic tips
