This poses an interesting question...what IS a proper amount to retire on? Million dollar housing is only really needed if you intend to retire in a super high cost of living state in the US/EU. Realistically you can move somewhere cheap and get a very nice house for 250-500k tops (in burgerland, flyover country, or could also consider a cheaper country altogether).

Sure, middle class America can be super expensive, but all the more reason to consider retiring where things are cheap? Doesn't really make sense to try retiring it out in CA/NY etc if you aren't bringing in cash. Yes, you can probably assume somewhere between 3-5% real growth above inflation on assets, so you aren't just purely burning cash. However, consider the classic American expat strategy of going to SEA (Thai/Flip/Viet etc), where you can live comfortably upper class (by SEA standards) on somewhere between 40-50k a year (and you could live frugally for as low as 15-20k if needed).

Realistically I think somewhere in the ballpark of $2m plus housing is probably a good place to be, with upwards of $3-5m being really secure for the most part. At that stage, regular life expenditure in retirement shouldn't really be a concern, and the only ways to really get broke are huge disasters (medical bill without insurance, natural disaster destroys house, divorce, having kids and tuition, getting scammed in a business/investment collapse etc).

If you consider an individual with just regular upper-class living expenditures, you can easily survive on far less assuming you aren't risking suddenly losing 50% out of nowhere.
