i was thinking about it, but the options are fairly limited. we have Spike and Reda, but both are made using VRoid (i believe, please correct me if i'm wrong on this). many of the bigger name 3D vtubers like Pren, Snuffy, and Fofamit have expensive custom models that were built from scratch in Blende.

While vidya gaems are a necessary crutch for chuubas, please do not talk about the vidya gaem all the time. Not all your viewers have necessarily played it to relate to you, or have anything to anchor their messages to. A lively and fun chat means viewers are likelier to come back, and will watch you regardless of whatever bullshit you play. I do not actually care about Nuclear Throne for example.

you can get free programs and free models, though i'd advise against that since anyone could shitpost with 'your' face since they're easily available, and they are possible to modify to some extent as well (removing parts, changing colours)
but honestly? if you aren't willing to put in about 100 dollars, you aren't going to be using a model at all unless you already owned the equipment for some reason.
I'm a notoriously cheap vtuber who made his own model, but i've still had to put down money for cameras to do tracking
but the most important piece of equipment is a better microphone, your audio can make or break things for people even if you're very interesting and entertaining, no matter what you choose.

i pop in over there now and then to talk about 3d stuff but one of the biggest differences is that 3d gives you so many more options to work with, and capabilities to import your model into different games and what not
for a utilitarian, 3d is the best choice, but there are no hard rules that you can't have both.
Nyaru for example normally uses a live2d but she also has a vroid she commissioned from someone which she uses for doing dancing while singing now with 3d tracking (3d tracking solutions range from free and jank but not well known to extremely expensive with a lot of options inbetween)

The difference is that a "good" vroid model is far and few inbetween, leaving only a custom 3D model that typically goes for a minimum 1k as the option. A good Live2D model is both cheaper and easier to get than even a mediocre (vroids are not mediocre) 3D model. On top of that, the hardware required to do anything good with Live2D is significantly more expensive. Vive trackers for the best consumer-level tracking will pull you 500USD minimum, upwards of 800+ if you want a VR headset with it. Webcam and Leap Motion with 3D is utter trash.

I LOVE my 3D model and I still tell people don't bother with 3D unless you have a ton of money to waste, just go 2D.

custom 3d models can be a lot lower in price than that, but depending on what you want the price could be high, it just depends on who you commission in both 3d and 2d.
you can commission higher end vroids as well like nyaru did.
you should look at tracking again, vive tracking is a lot less than that now and webcam tracking is getting better as time goes on, there is also kinect-based options which are reasonably cheap. Leap motion i agree is trash, recently got one and it's total dongs. There are some neat gloves that i saw online that are very early but are like 25 bucks and 3d printed custom builds if you're into electronics stuff
full body tracking is by no means a requirement for 3d though, just an available option, I wouldn't factor it into the costs for someone starting out.

No, a good vroid takes a good artist, and no one /here/ has a good vroid, and most aren't even good artists aside from Krimbo and a few others but good 2D art skill doesn't always translate to good texturing anyway. Custom 3D is usually shit LESS often, the problem is that all the good artists are constantly booked.

Vive tracking is looking like it's still pretty pricey, and webcam is jank as hell too most of the time. Like I said, I h eavily lean 3D but one of the only benefits to it is being able to be more expressive, except being more expressive requires a metric fuckton more money, and doing skits and shit requires the same on top of more knowledge about the 3D itself. I have yet to see any good VTuber skits that utilize any of the 3D benefits because no one has the hardware. To get an idea, look at the type of tracking any of the VShojos or other top 3D vtubers (minus Melody) has vs shitty webcam tracking.

The BIGGEST benefit come from the amount of custom animations with things like particle effects or transformations that no one does because no one knows how to do, or if they do they're just doing it on VRChat avatars instead.
