Ichorite definitely can contain more conventional “combat drugs” that elevates short-term combat prowess at the cost of long-term health and sanity although I imagine it mostly being used by less regulated units and individuals like bloodthirsty Moleym mercenaries. I imagine the strongest (not necessarily the best) fighters from /vnug/ being basically hooked to their mecha that pumps them full of drugs. They would basically be a force of nature in battle but at the same time most of them would also be too unstable for most duties even in a military. They would basically be shock troops on steroid (literally?) that can punch a hole and wreck havoc against anyone you point them at, but you won’t want them to be near anything you don’t want to destroy. Their on-board AI probably helps control them more but in a way it just trades unstable pilots for potentially unstable AI especially if you suspect they might be plotting something. I think a common space /vnug/ urban legend would be pilots that are basically consumed by their drugs and/or AI that they become some kinda wandering host in space who simply fight anyone in sight
As for psychology I think space /vnug/ people probably lean heavily towards some form of group mentality since every step of their development, from the first Belyms being made to establish colonies in distant worlds, the first generations of Belyms on Despina being raised by an AI designed more for colony administration than raising children, to the hostile environment of Despina encouraging people to cooperate for survival, and the mind-based interplanetary communication and machine control method derived from crystalline vitubium. I feel that more than physical isolation, social isolation like being disconnected from the network or get stranded without AI to keep them company would drive Belyms insane much quicker. That might be why Belyms who have to work alone aside from their AI (like mecha pilots and maybe some sorta outpost maintenance) often grow very attached to their AI as they’ve become their main source of social interaction

Is that a deadbeat pilot? heh. Pilots gone berserk are always fun, pushing for ever more power at the cost of your sanity and health is good setup for drama. It a classic in cyberpunk for one, I enjoyed how they did it in Edgerunners. It definitely feels like the relationship between the pilot and its AI is going to tend to the parasocial. Or rather social, depending on the AI's sentience level, AIs being able to also go rogue makes it sound like they're pretty sapient.
I think I have a pretty good idea of how the deadbeat mechs are gonna be now, I'll go for some kind of biomechanical deal, at least for some of them. They'll living creatures that fuse their skeletal system with the pilot's, and I think there'll be that flooded cockpit thing, always thought that was a cool feature.

The pic’s from G Gundam, the person in it basically got assimilated by machine. I feel that might be how /vnug/ pilots who went down the deep end ended up being like. They might be so drugged up that the mecha has become their life support system, and the 24/7 mental connection with the AI probably mean their mind’s completely linked to the on-board AI. As for the AI’s sapience I imagine they’re “human-like” enough that it’s hard to tell if they’re truly sentient or just very good at mimicking sentience. It’s a question that space /vnug/ people try to not think about too hard due to the implications either way. Chances are no AI has “officially” gone rogue and the pilots usually got blamed in their stead

Right, getting addicted to drugs you depend on to function in war makes sense, was pretty common with morphine iirc. That would make reintegration of veterans into civilian life more interesting too. That AI setup reminds me of Macross Plus, there's actually this scenario of an AI-assisted mech reading the thoughts of the pilot a bit too smartly and executing an offensive command that is what the pilot wants, but not what he would do. Though in that case it's officially blamed on a bug in the software instead of the pilot or the AI... If they're so effective the people selling and using that tech would have a pretty strong incentive to silence this kind of incident. (Also Macross Plus is pretty great, it does some things with human-AI relations that you might find inspiring, would recommend).

Truth be told I won’t be surprised if militant groups are deliberately encouraging drug usage for shock troops and other high-casualty roles in combat in part because they hope the fighters would die in the line of duty so that they won’t cause troubles after returning to civilian life

If you look into viking berserkers they got shitfaced on a cocktail of booze and drugs before rushing into battle. The drugs made them keep fighting long after they're mortally wounded.

I think it’s a pretty common practice and Vitubia-era /vnug/ also does something like that even if they might not remember that specifically. I do think the AI helps a lot with automating some of the simpler functions and they have enough autonomy to let the mecha fight even after the pilot has died. I guess having the AI go berserk against enemies that have killed the pilot even if it would lead to the unit’s destruction mirrors the berserker practice well

>> No.47997938

Ehh... Mechs are also expensive. Human pilots are replaceable but the mech fighters are not. So mechs returning with dead human pilots would be more common than not I think.

Remember the battlemech guide to defeating a mech, hit the legs to make them a sitting duck, hit the weapons to make them no longer dangerous, hit the pilot to skip these steps. Killing a pilot would likely be a core point of mech combat and training, automating a detection system for them to return to base after pilot vitals are no longer detected would make a lot of sense.

>> No.48005968

>>48005446
There is risk for mech returning to base to obtain another pilot. There's also a predictability element for mechs to return to base. Also a mech can be programmed to self-destruct in a kamikaze attack with a dead pilot. It depends on how much the enemy values pilot's life how mechs will react.

>> No.48006659

>>48005446
I guess that depends on how dependent on the pilot the mech is. If the pilot is mainly there for decision-making and an ally can take over remotely for that if he dies, I can also see mechs continuing to fight with a dead pilot. It would likely depend on tech, doctrine and other things.

I like the breakdown of number of cyclones/hurricanes for each region, that's probably the best way to get across the severity of the weather.
>which I wont go into now due to me having spent the last 6 hours writing this document, leading to me experiencing an immense desire to move on to doing something else with my day.
KEK
Also, I now know what the weather channels meant when they talked about the "polar vortex", interesting.
Regarding glaciers, I do not believe alpine glaciers in temperate regions such as /uoh/'s are a significant source of icebergs, those would tend to melt as they descend in altitude, instead of calving all in one piece like some polar glaciers. Though we don't really have an analogue to the /uoh/ glacier irl. Nice section as well and cool document, thanks anon.

The problem with /uoh/ is we have absolutely nothing to compare it to irl as you mentioned but also as another climate, geology, weather anon, I would caution comparing it to alpine glaciers largely because of the scale. We can probably get a better understanding of what is going on when we have more in-depth lore about the whole /uoh/ icecap itself to make judgments since it's such an anomaly that is likely caused by magic (imo unless someone wants to disagree.) There are also some smaller ice caps in fetish that can also be explored with that in mind too, but i would reckon they would follow the alpine dynamic you suggested.

>>48043520
I agree that the uoh icecap is pretty exceptional and we don't have its equivalent on current Earth, though I'm not sure it couldn't be formed by natural processes. But whether it's magic or not, the reason alpine icecaps don't create icebergs is unrelated to that and is pretty simple. It's just a matter that while descending down their mountain, the glacier has to cross a region warm enough for the ice to melt. For the /uoh/ glacier it would either be the Bsk region to the south, or a coastal border of Cwa/Csa to the north. Glaciers move relatively slowly, so I think it would melt into a river while traveling towards the ocean in those warmer regions.
That's all assuming a natural setup though, if the uoh glacier was like, supernaturally drawing atmospheric moisture and expelling glaciers at an accelerated rate, such that the glaciers get shot down the slope fast enough that they don't have the time to melt, that could result in iceberg creation. But that weather system would be pretty very weird, I wouldn't go for that without worrying about the climates for the rest of the continent first.

>>48046302
Correct, I wouldn't worry about the icebergs from it myself either for the reasons you outlined. Ultimately, as stated, we need more in-depth lore on it to understand it properly in the context it is presented in and the map does not do justice to our understanding of it either I believe.
