I was speaking to a few chuuba friends some time ago, and I was reminded of how damn unadjusted I am socially and in terms of my interests... Couldn't talk about anything and felt super inadequate. Those guys put a ton of work into their stuff, everything is well-made, they have really cool models and branding, and I'm sitting on a ton of poorly-made content propping up my channel. My interests are super niche, and when I talk about them and my ideas to other vtuber-related friends, I feel like they're just humouring me. I don't have any skills that can support being an indie, and gaining those skills is like climbing up a steep mountain. I've definitely tried over the last few months.

It's honestly times like these that make me want to graduate. It's not like numbers or inclining is the problem here, I'm doing okay compared to the others I started with, and I've achieved all my goals. I just feel I can't measure up to my peers creatively, and there's really no future for me. I'm also feeling like I've lost the main point when it comes to why I decided to become a vtuber. I'm really lost. I'm not that creative, I'm menhera, and I don't have any good skills.

It's not like I can't fix those issues, but I've been in a slump for months now with no progress. Taking a hiatus is out of the question as I've done it before. I don't even stream that much anymore, I've been working on other content projects, but they're all stuck on some type of roadblock. I can't even set up a discord server for myself.

I don't really know what to do here. Sorry for the rant (don't know why I'm apologizing here), but it would be nice to hear if any other /asp/ folks are having similar issues. If it helps for context, I'm a male and I'm approaching a full year of being active. Past affiliate and all the basic stuff.

That's probably right. I'm a good bit younger than most /asp/ folk, and I didn't get into content creation/creative stuff until recently... I might have more vtuber activity months than Gen 4 for example, but when it comes to background experience, I'm a newbie. I should stop looking at other people's stuff and stick to improving. In the end, I actually haven't put in as many hours as some other people, when I think of it like that. Gotta keep going.

It's weird when you pour all this energy into your project and stream and try to do everything right even when everythign is trying to make everything wrong.
When you constantly try to gridge the gap but nothing seems to be working. Shit I met my modest objectives, but I'm eating dirt off of the ground when I see people that began with me, have about the same quality of content and that just soar and continue to grow. It empties one soul to see that.
I can't get menhera on stream because I'm supposed to be positive energy toward change and improvement, I learn things on stream, I try to constantly remake my formula based on what I know and what I can do. And yet I'm still speaking to the void most of the time, with some dedicated fans I've come to love like little cousins sometimes.
They don't know it but their interrations make them so important for me, and they shouldn't know it, I'm supposed to be strong and proud. I've got one menhera moment on stream, just one minute of reality and I've regretted it ever since.
I love what I do, I truly do. But I'd like to have some dopamine please. I'd like to have repeat viewers rather than a flat line, bots and nothing else after that. i want to actually be able to support my streams and improve my material and eat more than once a day to have more energy to give to streaming every single day.
One day I'll have interraction and a loving community. One day some will come back to enjoy my insane rants, my voices and the wacky scenario I try to make on the fly.And my unfunny dad jokes, and my stupid drawings, and my science.

1. I like Vtubing as creative expression. There's a lot you can do in terms of 3D modeling, planning out more complex streams in terms of entertainment (like scripted sequences and intros) and some other things. I want to continue doing this in the future, but without an audience none of this matters, which is why i ultimately cracked. People say "just keep doing it if you have fun" but they entirely miss the point. A stream isn't a stream if there is no audience, they are an integral part of the creative expression.

2. A big part of succeeding comes down to luck. Getting raided or noticed by someone bigger is the easiest and quickest way to grow. It can happen to anyone, at least as long as the copium dose is high enough. There's always talk about how ironmouse streamed to nobody for some time and she's not alone with that. Every day the chances of it happening goes down as more and more vtubers / streamers appear and standing out is more and more difficult. It's a decent enough straw to grasp on.

3. Experience and Evolution. I learned a lot in these 2 years about all kinds of technologies (audio, video, 3D environment, game development, presentation, vocal training / singing). I don't want to grow old and lose track of the future, so things like learning about Tiktok, no matter how asinine it sounds are important so you don't end up as a bitter old grampa cursing technology. My mother hates computers because she gave up trying to understand it 20 years ago and it's hurting her every day now. I don't want to be like that. Sure I don't have to stream to learn about new technologies, but hey as long as it works.

4. Sense of Belonging and the Menhera. I started vtubing because i needed something to keep me alive. It was "either this or it's over" so I had a very valid interest in keeping this ball rolling. In some cases I also felt like I could connect to some peers for the first time in my life. This didn't last long because the jealousy and distance built up quickly as they outgrew me. In the end vtubing was meant to keep my negativity in check and it did for those 2 years but it caught up and now it's fueling the fire.

5. My approach isn't right. Yes i know that, the problem is that the issue lies within my innate personality. After having tried out a lot I came to the conclusion that I'm not a person that can survive in the social media / entertainment environment because I'm not a person that can gain interest on first glance. I'm bland and boring and I have to type a text wall like this to even get a point across on this basketweaving forum that nobody will read. I can attempt to make a funny meme on tiktok or crack a silly joke for a clip, but that's not me it's forced and it shows. If i change myself so much that I become more approachable for viewers, I will end up hating the hobby and myself even more than I already do. Being myself has appealed to some people in the past, and a lot of people said they liked what I do, but they are peers mostly, they aren't viewers. Maybe from an outside perspective my ideas seemed neat, but nobody wants to sit through that. The numbers prove that. At the end I streamed for about 2 months, and had a bunch of those streams with absolutely nobody watching. Maybe having had a small audience first and then see them leave might have broken me.

Maybe I will try again one day. But I'm not sure if a broken heart can heal just like that.

Anons, I'm begging you. Stop thinking that advertising yourself, your content, and your streams is something you're supposed to be ashamed of doing. Internalizing jokey phrases like "shilling" and training yourself that telling people you exist and asking them to look at your content is somehow shameful gets you nothing but a lonely spot at the bottom of a catalog and 2 random viewers on a YouTube video that got lost looking for something else.

We go on abot Digby's approach enough but that sort of shamelessness carries. Obviously, don't advertise where you're not welcome. Don't just show up to another chuuba's discord or chat and say "hey look at me." Definitely do pitch your content to people who WILL watch it. When you find that demographic, dial in on them.

Meh, I'm just used to be that one person with "enormous potential" that systematically underperform due to chance. Litterally due to statistics. Machines that were important for my science experiments broke the day before or the day where I needed to do my experiments and set me back a lot. Happened in all my labs, for all my experiments. It's a pretty infuriating existence to be that cursed and unremarkable, but it makes you ressourceful and renacious at least.
I'm continue to pump out content everyday more out of spite and menhera than ambition these days. Just to dare the universe to give me a inch so I can take the mile. Or maybe i'll just go inch by inch, who knows. One can always imagine Sysiphus to be happy.

I think certain personalities work well for ESLs and some are really bad. ESLs who try to come off as smart or stoic or nerdy seem to be hurt greatly by poor English skills or a thick accent. If you are hyper happy and friendly, ESL can kind of help you play into a bit of a bimbo, himbo or just generally pon archetype. I think the poster child for how to play an ESL well is pikamee. It probably is easier to do as a female, but I think a himbo ESL could work well too.

I don't think ESL hurts males any more than it does females, it might seem like it and its definitely a debuff by itself but males already have a significantly harder time than females in vtubing already. But like I said I think you can work around it a lot by playing a dumb character. Being ESL makes you seem like you are like 20 iq lower than you are, so if you are trying to play the smart guy or a cool guy you are going to come off kind of pathetic. But you can play into a stupid character in a few different ways as well. There's the classic stupid but endearing genki type. But you can also go for a "very overconfident but actually stupid guy who always falls on his face in funny ways" type that you can play well as an ESL even without that high energy feel to it. I think the third way to go about it just maximize your sex appeal, there certainly are females who like weird accents and like you coming off as dumb himbo, which also doesn't necessarily require a high energy approach.
