If they ever did they don't anymore. Google doesn't delete accounts now, just all the data. They don't because Yahoo recycled emails before and spammers would email Yahoo accounts (e.g. from leaked contacts, databases, whatever) to find which would bounce from being deleted, then reregister that account and use it to gain access to other accounts by doing password resets.
