Drawing a hyper specific niche of porn is how you would do it. Talent comes a very distant second sometimes if people are desperate and autistic enough. If you don't want to draw pron then it's an uphill battle. I managed to get non pron commissions by inserting myself into a hyper specific niche and winning an art contest in that niche. Didn't pan out too well though because that niche had a few established artists that were the go to and I couldn't get a leg in the door, even after winning the art contest. Easiest way is to just put yourself out there with a commission sheet and seeing if people bite.

I've just been doing it for a long time. It's always been just a second sub-income while I try to get better at my main interest (drawing).
It started with basic anime girl poses. It's actually pretty easy to market yourself as that since people are pretty desperate to get their OC drawn as long as you're halfway decent. Might be a bit harder now since there's AI for that specific case now, but some people are still lazy/tech illiterate enough that you can still fill the supply for the demand.
It gets a whole lot easier when you've built up a following. It's very noticeable when you get over 5k, you can fill 5 comm slots in 2 days, and when I got to 10k it fills up in a few hours with plenty to choose from and turn down ones I didn't want to do.

For following and getting noticed, people will say to network but from my experience that doesn't actually carry you as far as it's advertised to be. From all the "networking" big following people I see, all they'll end up being are big following account but low engagement on their posts with desperate commission begging posts every time. When I tried to brown nose and art trade with bigger people this has been the case too, at best you'll get a couple pity commissions which is better than nothing. I'm not saying to not network, it's still essential because you HAVE to do everything you can to grow if you care about the grind going somewhere, but it's been championed too much by certain people. My suspicion is that it is a cope because the actual reason for getting traction is just outright skill issue.

Whether you like it or not art skill is an issue. This may not actually be traditional art fundies that is the problem, it's less talked about but there are social media specific art secret techs. Things like making attractive thumbnail, easily and quickly digestible content, seductive censoring through image cutoff, funny content, unique/novel concepts(filling niche fetishes is part of this). They're all skills that are less than the basic art fundies, but it carries farther in the social media game. You should develop your fundies, but don't neglect these in favor of 100% anatomical accuracy for example. Digital social media art is a genre of its own whether you like it or not and you have to study the game. Even doing funny non art posts is part of this, keep in mind that in social media you're making "content" not just art.

Third is just outright luck, getting a big account to RT you is the biggest boost you can get. The important part is that you can leverage things in your favor by doing certain things. The most basic chores you have to do are obvious, cross-post your content in as many places you can, pixiv, reddit, Instagram, boorus, here, discord servers. You also have to find the good time slots for each site, it's basic research you can google but each site has an ideal time to spot/when most people browse the site. Doing these due diligence is just the minimum to try and get as many eyes as possible to see your work. Whether they engage with it depends on the point #2, hence why you can't cope out of skill issue. No matter how many people see your work through crossposts, if it's lacking then they won't share it enough for you to grow.

When it comes to breaking follower count walls, think of your skills as Stats soft cap, your luck as gacha pulls, and your social media shilling as the daily tasks that gives you the gacha currencies.
Just like any small business, the higher you still have to climb, the harder you have to grind. You have more leniency the more content you are with your place.
To be clear this is a pretty shit work if you're looking for money. But if it's already something you do out of passion and will be doing everyday as hobby anyway then it's definitely great if you can get money out of it, so that should be your main consideration.
Oh unless if you're a third worlder, then it's FANTASTIC work. At least if the dollar keeps strong.

This isn't the type of discord server to advertise in. What you want are specifically artist/commissioner/fandom community servers. You can usually find these by snooping in fandom subreddits, big name artist profiles who usually have their own servers, and if you're particularly networky then you can usually find yourself in private servers of random degenerate groups that share their favorite artist lists for commissions.
Most of the time in these servers, all you do is post your art, engage in the replies it gets and play friendly, but don't be too attached to get into argument. Whether you like it or not, when you become bigger as a "brand" then you're an influencer. Control your speech, be professional. Save the chats and jokes for your friend group discord. This extends a good amount to your twitter rants as well.
Professionalism isn't about lying to your audience, it's playing the kayfabe. You are to a lesser extent, just like the vtubers we're drawing. We're not artists in 2000s deviantart anymore, giant social media has made it so everyone has to be an influencer in some ways. It doesn't necessarily have to be as thick as if we're youtubers, but the part playing is absolutely there and you have to learn it.

Your calculation is correct, to get anywhere near minimum wage with your commissions it's definitely going to take a lot. Even more so if you're in the first world.
The most practical argument against this is (unfortunately) skill issue. If doing $100 commissions is going to take you forever to "pay off" then all you have to do is make your art worth more than $100. It's not exactly out of the question either, people will absolutely drop $200-300 if they think your art is worth it. And if your bottleneck is quantity then developing a quicker, more streamlined work process is also a skill issue.
You get what you put in when running a business. If you're not willing to get better and be competitive then why do you expect to get monetary compensation above minimum wage?

This one is needs a bit more self introspection I think. Think about it like this; if this is your hobby and you're guaranteed to spend a lot of time doing it in the future anyway, why not get money for it? That's the practical argument for getting commissions.
Now for the fun aspect, you have to think about why you do this activity. Is the act of doing itself what's fun about it? Or is it the feeling of realization that you've improved after every session? Or is it the feeling of having created a product? The answer isn't actually going to be a specific one of those but a combination of them.
Even skilled artists have parts of the drawing process that they most likely dislike, there are a ton of monotonous and challenging steps in the process, so if you're basing your fun on solely the act of drawing then personally I think you're delusional. Now we can wonder why would you go through the tough parts if it's not fun. Well why do you choose this activity over other things like playing video games if all you look for is the "fun in doing"? Probably because we love drawing. Then isn't it exactly what love is to weather the tough times and take it with the good?
If you base your fun on improving then isn't it a better feeling knowing that you can create something in a specified parameter defined by someone else in a timely manner, meaning you have to be disciplined enough to live up to the standards? (Doing requests in drawthreads is already what this is about anyway)
If you base your fun on the final product, is it not a better feeling knowing that it's not just you that appreciate the final product, but someone else too? And not just in a "your friend saying 'yeah it looks good" to you in a polite manner either, you have literal, monetary proof that they appreciate your skills.

After my initial apprehension of trying to make money out of this hobby, these are just my personal thoughts that I end up with. Not every commission have turned out well, but I try and learn from every one just as I would from personal art and studies. Plus, I get paid which means I can work less hours in my "real" job and get to use that time to do more studies to improve more in my drawing.
If your line of thought is that you don't necessarily want to take it seriously and hold yourself to a standard of constant improvement, that's fair. But then why not choose other activities that gives you an easier, more instant dopamine hit like vidya or jacking off?
If it's because you think you're not "ready" for it, when will you be? Are any of us ever ready to face any trials of life? The only way to tell is to throw yourself into the fire and see what comes out. Even if you fail and your first series of commissions are a major failure so what? You're not dead, it does not take away your ability to apologize to your clients and try again.
Personally I think all artists and any other students of discipline should want to hold themselves to a higher standard of constant improvement. What's the worst that could happen? You get better at your skills AND get paid for it?
