Got a question about rollin'. Is the "8+ is always a success" system really better than the dynamic difficulty thing they used during Kiara's session? That's the one I remember from the very few times I played VtM.

>> No.5988908

>>5988772
That'll depend. If the average task difficulty is low then the dynamic difficulty would win out. The reverse is true as well. The main advantage of the 8+ success system is time as the GM doesn't have to keep estimating the difficulty for each instance. It also reduces GM bias from the equation if all rolls are public.

I think it is. It's less fiddly. You can also apply modifiers to certain rolls, such as adding or removing dice, or requiring more than 1 success.

Having played both system, is better for combat and faster in general, it also help the master to keep a better pace since is not stoppin to ponder which difficulty use, and let you put all modifiers in the number of dice,

No mundane, I was thinking something more in the line of Scout doing donuts, i think the possibility of failure in that task is fair, and it nake sense for the character to have only 3 dice since she doesn't have experience driving in heavily transited areas or in dangerous situations, yet the with the 8 sistem her possibility lf success are too low especially since is something that she used to do perhaps mori could use more possitives dice bonus in certain task

Is a testament of the high quality of her narration that some people forget that she is a rusty player kinda novice st, doing a bunch of session 0 to girls with little free time in a month particulary busy in their company

I don't think anyone is saying these haven't been really good, above average for sure. But perhaps because of there high quality the quibbles within become more apparent and people become more passionate to become closer to perfection.

Matt Mercer wasn’t Matt Mercer to start. Some of the early CR on G&S show some of their growing pains. After more than a hundred sessions with the same core group they obviously have things working smoothly but I would say even season 1 is basically training wheels. I wouldn’t expect them to gel until season 3 or 4 based on the groups I played with in the past. That they are so entertaining this soon is actually what makes me excited.

The real test of her abilities as GM will come down to how she herds cats in the first real group session. She can definitely engage and wrangle the girls in a 1 on 1, but there's no telling how good/bad the characters will mesh with one another in a group setting.

So who will be the first NPC to die when the season starts?

So far in Mythton, excluding Vic, we have the land lady and bird owner who we might not see again after Tiaras intro, Yuuls classmates as well as Chad and the Brohood who are likely to die when trying to hunt down supernaturals and falling badly, the boy with the toy wagon and old woman who both seem a little odd as they just happen to know about the Bar where eveyone will meet up and Doc and Scouts sister who may or may not tag along in the Mythbreakers adventures and might just stay at the bar or in a save place.

>> No.5992761

Question for nWOD and COD folks. If Scout attacks say a regular human with 2 defense with her pick does she roll 3 str plus 4 weaponry - 2 defense for 5 dice, 7 on all out attack? Then damage would be say base 3L plus successes?

Where does the plus 2 go? Attack dice pool? Or automatically add 2 to damage? If she rolled 3 successes wouldn’t that be 3 base plus 3 dice plus 2 bonus for 8 lethal? Wouldn’t that down most of the party in one shot?

>> No.5992990

>>5992761
It depends on nWoD or CofD. In nWoD damage is added to your dice pool when you roll for the attack. In CofD it's added as automatic successes if the attack is successful. So in 1e higher damage weapons are more accurate, which leads to higher damage, and in 2e they're not any more accurate but if they hit they hit harder.

So for nWoD you'd roll Stat + Skill + Damage - Defence = Successes as damage.
Then in CofD you'd roll Stat + Skill - Defence = Successes + Damage as damage.

I am optimist, i think watoto would be a lot nicer in a group as comedic relief/heart/hidden traitor without having to carry all spoilight, Yuul have the potential of a great straight man, tiara and scout show they can carry the action, interact with npc and keep the story going but since there are 2 character with that capacity and energy there is a lesser risk of a protagonist sindrome (a problem thar i always have when o try to narrate)

Better yet mori have use every session to introduce not only possible enemies but a quite good number lf npc that can star interact with different players (a lot of potencial with scout-vic, yuul-nice)

>> No.6001988

>>6001571
In games I run, that is typically something I talk about with the player. Like hey, you bringing this character along is cool. But just know that if you're dragging them into dangerous situations, they might die. If you aren't careful and word gets out about your sister to that vampire with a grudge against you, she might be in for some trouble. If she stays completely out of anything, she'll be safe, otherwise, she's on the chopping block. She's as much a character in all this as anyone else and isn't going to be protected by plot armor just because you invented her instead of me.

It's doubtful that we would hear that conversation on a stream. That's something I would usually mention in private, just to make sure the player was both okay with it and understood what I meant. Besides that, in the context of a streamed game, it would be a neat shock and surprise for the viewer if the sister, who had been tagging along or whatever, to actually die.

Obviously it would be a dick move if it comes out of nowhere. Doubly so if there is no foreshadowing and no way to avoid it, done purely for the drama.

>waste of time
It's not like much time was spent on the sister. Nobody made up a character sheet and her backstory is literally just "she's there".

And it is entirely possible that Gura will decide that she wants to create a whole new character rather than the sister after she learns more about the world and gets into it a bit more. Maybe go back to her mystery dark lady concept.

By the way, does the sister even have a name? I can't remember.

I came into a session that was already running, and the DM threw a NPC at me that he was tired of keeping track of. The story was based on Norse mythology, and going by the source material, the character's class basically meant she was royalty. So, I went into it intending to be a Disney Princess frolicking in the woods surrounded by woodland critters. But the DM had to now figure out why the hell there was a noble family out in the middle of nowhere, so he just dumped the Road to Hel there, and revealed that my character's family had been tasked for generations with guarding it. We slowly massaged the backstory so that my character always knew, and the DM slipped her a Necromancer secondary class on the down low. So, we replaced the woodland critters with an army of undead, but there's no less frolicking and singing.

Nope. No one has any concrete idea of his design. Ame’s session basically didn’t define or flesh out his character at all. I’ve seen everything form a redneck, to a literal goblin, to Gollum, to a hobo, to ame with a hat. I don’t think she has a firm grasp of her character either. Problem with meme characters, aside from only being amusing for like five minutes, is they are often a substitute for actual character development. Compare how much you know about Scout or even Yuul/Tiara’s personality, temperament, style of conflict resolution, and appearance compared to Watoto.

Watoto is the equivalent of joining an improv comedy class and playing a retard with Tourette’s. There’s a few people who could pull that off but for most people it’s a terrible idea.

Mori very clearly isn’t running a stock WoD grimdark setting but remember Malkavians losing arguments with stop signs, people falling in love with the literal moon, and fucking Caine (sire:God) is driving a cab for kicks. There’s plenty of room for lighthearted antics, black comedy, and silliness in WoD especially for Hunters before their literally life changing encounter with the supernatural. The GM is free to ignore the combat rules whenever they think it makes sense you think there are strict rules for tone? Complaining about anime girls in my serious ttrpg is peak irony. Mori should have a Princess:the Hopeful side character for Laffs down the road just to see the various reactions

Mind you, they are running a homebrewed version where some rules don't apply, and setting-wise there is a mix of old and new WoD. Otherwise, HtV should be the big one to focus on for now, at least until they drop Vigil 2nd Edition (it will take a while, but there are some official non-edited manuscripts laying around). Hunter the Vigil and Chronicles of Darkness books are the best books. Mori is mixing in some old world of darkness things, mostly with the werewolves. The wiki is probably fine to read as far as that is concerned.

If you want general atmosphere and some lore without reading, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines is a great game, though extremely vampire centric (obviously). Lots of what is in there doesn't apply to this game, even some of the inns and outs of vampire society, but it will give a good general sense. Though do get the unofficial patch.

Yes, in the game books there are a few pre-built scenarios+locations to give GMs and players a headstart. For an instance, Vigil's version of Philadelphia is possibly the messiest (in a good way) jumble of supernatural groups struggling for control, along with many Hunter factions. But in this case, Mori made Mythton and adjacent places all by herself, combining with a lot of concepts and creatures from older books.

Working on the collection right now. Currently doing Yuul/Ghuul. I've already tried a few ideas with Watoto but the lack of concrete details on him makes it difficult to pin down something decent. His circumstances either implies he's a grown man with a developmental disability that keeps him at home or a kid. If Ame can manage to pin the age then it'll be much easier. Haven't even tried with Vic, Dr. Nice, or Scout's sister yet.

After getting the main cast out of the way, I'll either start making fanart derivatives like the Raita-style ones some anon wanted for fun/practice. That, or I might have enough material to work with from the main sessions to design Elite 2 versions (think Arknights Base/Elite 2 designs)

I don't really mind the rework if they come in with some design detail that I hadn't predicted because it's all good experience. It just takes time to make them.

Well the fact that Hel is probably one of the nicer gods in the Norse myths helped take the edge off of the sting of "You were born to be a cryptkeeper". The Norse saw Hel as a maternal goddess, your grave is her womb, she personally births you into the afterlife, and cares for you as if you were one of her own children. So being a stereotypical Disney Princess actually works in the character's favor, because since she's a white hat necromancer, she's not allowed to enslave the dead to her will, she has to win them over with friendship and love instead. So every single undead in her army (except the lich), from the giants, to the dragons, are beings she has personally won over. It's made for a very interesting campaign.

Then they take the session straight off the rails and ignore the content you spent a week working on either dodging plot hooks or just straight murderhoboing as you scramble to make interesting characters and scenarios for them on the fly. I have to imagine Mori was laughing inside as Ina somehow not only avoided every plot hook but straight up tried to murder an innocent janny. All WoD books have media recommendations in the. HtV2e's it's pretty massive. So I'll just paste the whole thing in to read. I'll attach the Chronicles of Darkness one, as well as VtR2e's

>Non-Fiction
Alien Dawn by Colin Wilson is a nonfiction look at all manner of bizarre phenomena and monstrous incursions into our world. Folklore, ghosts, lost time, psychic weirdness, aliens, and monsters all appear in some form or another

The Science of Vampires by Katherine Ramsland, Ph. D is a deep dive into vampire lore from a scientific perspective. The techniques used in this book can be fuel for science-minded characters and cells

Parasite Rex by Carl Zimmer is a compelling, easy-to-read book about real parasites: worms, bacteria, and flies. They bore into bellies, bloodstreams, and brains

The Element Encyclopedia series, written by several authors, offers a wealth of knowledge that covers spirits, psychic phenomena, cults and secret societies, witchcraft, spells, monsters — even birthdays that can be used to build compelling and unique characters with their own personalities

For urban legends, check out books by Jan Harold Brunvald, who’s known for popularizing the term. London Urban Legends: The Corpse on the Tube and Other Stories by Scott Wood, Urban Legends: The As-Complete-As-One-Could-Be Guide to Modern Myths, by Ngaire E. Genge, and Encyclopedia of Beasts and Monsters in Myth, Legend and Folklore by Theresa Bane are also great materials to check out. Reference books on urban legends, often tied to myths and folklore, are also published by small presses and sold in museums. Some introductory books, like Yokai Attack! The Japanese Monster Survival Guide written by Hiroko Yoda and Matt Alt, may be found in the comics section or in specialty bookstores, too

Lastly, several dictionaries can offer new tools to describe strange phenomena. One such reference book is Weird Words: A Lovecraftian Lexicon, written by Dan Clore

>Fiction
The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher, the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series by Laurel K. Hamilton, and The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare each focus on fighting the darkness in their own way. Additional books to check out are Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom by Julie Kenner, Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse, The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan, The Good House by Tananarive Due, and Hunting Monsters by S.L. Huang

Hellblazer, from DC/Vertigo comics, spawned occult detective John Constantine and inspired a movie, Constantine, and a TV series of the same name. Along those same lines, the Lucifer TV show, a spin-off from the Sandman comics by Neil Gaiman, dives into the L.A. scene with a touch of the infernal. S.P.O.O.K.S. from Rosarium Publishing is an investigative comic where the characters unravel modern conspiracy theories — perfect fodder to weave behind the scenes of a chronicle while commenting on race

The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman is a stellar example of humans trying like hell to win the unwinnable fight, and the popular TV show of the same name highlights how necessary it is to find something to hang on to in our darkest moments

Of course, no list of monster-hunting comics would be complete without mentioning the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense or B.P.R.D. from Dark Horse Comics

>Films.TV
In addition to previously mentioned shows, Supernatural is an American monster-hunting series that aired 15 seasons from 2005 to 2020. As the story swells, brothers Sam and Dean join forces with allied hunters at “The Roadhouse” for several seasons until they join the Men of Letters. This show, while tightly focused on the Winchesters’ perspective, offers story hooks and ways to shape a chronicle around a larger mystery. The X-Files is like an ongoing Hunter chronicle, maybe even featuring a pair of Task Force: VALKYRIE hunters

Monster-hunting movies range from the serious to the comedic and everything in between. Fallen, directed by Gregory Hoblin, is about a detective in pursuit of a supernatural serial killer — a demon that jumps from body to body. Lake Effect is a movie about hunting the Yeti, perfect for cryptid-themed hunts. Dog Soldiers is a spectacular werewolf-hunting movie and The Babadook is about a strange, inexplicable creature who terrifies a young, single mother

>Vidya
Yes indeed, games can inspire games. The number of monster-hunting video games is limitless, but some bear special mention: Alone in the Dark, F.E.A.R., Half-Life 1 & 2, Silent Hill, The Witcher, and Monster Hunter can all serve as inspiration for a cool, action-oriented Hunter: The Vigil game

>Resources for The Slasher Chronicle
Read Goth by Otsuichi, Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite, The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes, and A Killer’s Mind by Mike Omer. Watch It Follows, Bloody Reunion, The Slit-Mouthed Woman, Nadja, and Session 9. Serial killers can also be found in the Japanese manga series Death Note, Monster, Erased, and several others

Mori could easily throw some negative modifiers so that she doesn’t get lucky and forge a +3 Excalibur in a garage. Her pickax is mechanically better than an actual sword using typical WoD rules. She’s pretty dangerous in melee so between her and Tiara they should be able to handle humans without too much trouble at first.

A supposed quote that she thinks RPing is cringe, her incomplete grasp of the setting, and the Watoto method acting where she didn’t speak in complete sentences for the entire stream.

I could see her being less invested but I don’t think it’s fair to make a definitive statement until the entire group’s together.

I did notice for Gura’s stream Calli made it a point to say that you can just talk as yourself and not as your character; it could be that Ame didn’t get that.

Imagine if she actually took shrooms during the stream.

It's very likely result of Ame's session. Mori probably realized this is a problem mid-session but saying it out loud or even after muting and then having ame try to change her behavior would've been at the very least jarring. Hopefully, Ame at least watches other tutorials and gets an idea both for the world and for how to RP so she's better in group setting.

I swear she talked about doing it in the field and not part of her forging. Like, taking a handlebar or something and magiking a sword from it.

Haha. No. It's basically just a crowbar. +2 is not impressive
