Had to do some digging on this one. Apparently a bunch of cute Nissin commercials from the mid-80s for UFO instant yakisoba are to blame. The mascot was an axolotl that would say "My name is Oopa Loopa!" and the jingle repeating its name was an ear worm. Most people in Japan had no clue axolotls even existed up until those commercials ran, so they just started calling the species "Oopa Loopa" because it was cute and easy to remember: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xY5MbCSPapI

They're also crazy biologically:

>The feature of the axolotl that attracts most attention is its healing ability: the axolotl does not heal by scarring and is capable of the regeneration of entire lost appendages in a period of months, and, in certain cases, more vital structures, such as tail, limb, central nervous system, and tissues of the eye and heart. They can even restore less vital parts of their brains. They can also readily accept transplants from other individuals, including eyes and parts of the brain—restoring these alien organs to full functionality. In some cases, axolotls have been known to repair a damaged limb, as well as regenerating an additional one, ending up with an extra appendage that makes them attractive to pet owners as a novelty.

In captivity axolotls are part tiger salamander. There aren't any in captivity that are full blooded and the ones in the wild are probably extinct. What we have in captivity breeds like crazy and you can even send fertilized eggs in the mail so that species isn't going anywhere. The only really shitty thing about them Is they need relatively cold water to not die. Aquarium chillers are expensive.

Axelotl DNA in theory could be the cure for nearly anything. Axelotls are one of the few vertebrates that can produce their own stem cells after birth, which allows them to do shit like re-grow limbs and heal back nerve and organ damage. >>6192877
It is an endemic species of a region and more accurately, a lake in Mexico and it's so polluted it is likely the species will go extinct in the wild soon.

>>6198669
Not only that, but there have been experiments regarding how much of a salamander it isn't or can it be
>Scientists placed two axolotls in habitats of similar size but with a different condition
>one was nearly completely underwater as expected of its species normal habitat
>The other one had a limited supply of water and its habitat was made slightly drier and hotter
>After several weeks
>Underwater axolotl stayed the same
>Axolotl with a limited supply of water underwent metamorphosis and became a salamander
>Axolotls which undergo Metamorphosis can still breed and their offspring will start like the one underwater and if the conditions improve, will stay in underwater form, if conditions deteriorate again, will become salamander
These things are on another level when it comes to survivability, too bad they can't survive pollution that much and will decide to asphyxiate underwater rather than to start perching in shallow water with fell branches to become a salamander and move to a more “humid” location
>Ionidine
You can inject them but the chances are it is not gonna survive because the transformation happens quickly relatively speaking

>>6218997
The Mexican government doesn't give a fuck anymore because there's breeders abroad, although those most of the time aren't “pure” axolotls and mixed with other stuff but whatever, for them it is going to get saved or eventually tossed in a river somewhere else an thrive as an invasive species.

>a lake in Mexico and it's so polluted it is likely the species will go extinct in the wild soon
It's the pitiful remnants of the lake Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City) was built on, Lake Texcoco (and its connected lakes). Aztecs had mechanisms to control the water level but the Spaniards busted them sieging the city and failed to ever replicate them.
After 400 years of massive flooding later and refusing to relocate the city, 60 years ago they finally finished a kilometers-long drainage tunnel that turned part of the lakebed into a desert, which prompted such massive overdrafting of the aquifer below that Mexico City has since sunk 33 feet into the lakebottom mud it's built on. The great "lake" is now a salt marsh that's processed for its salt and virtually everything that was once only found in the lake is extinct.
I will never not fly into an autistic rage whenever I'm reminded of how hard spanioids fucked up that part of the world.

They breathe and hydrate through their skin so it's very absorbent, as soon as they submerge in water that's full of pesticides, dumped trash that's leeching chemicals or any kind of harmful run-off (human sewage, livestock sewage and any other kind of wastewater, and really anything else you can imagine e.g. fucking graveyard embalming fluids), they're fucked, and so are whatever spawn they lay there.

Yeah its sad,
I visited the village I grew up in this summer just for old times sake and took a walk down the old roads.
When I was a kid you'd walk down those roads and every step would send dozens of frogs leaping into the creek because the area was always lousy with them.
I didn't see a single frog this summer.
The creek was low and had a gross orange film over it, almost like rust.
No frogs in the creek, all the plants along the road were dead, it was really sad
