It's a cute premise, but I think you can really sell the conflict Suburu is having a lot more if you wrote some minor events leading up to it. After the reveal itself and her own reaction to it, it's kinda offputting to imagine that it was the first thing she would try to do. Perhaps let yourself and her build up to it, and at the same time you'd give yourself more wholesome situations with that funny duck. You could also benefit from showing rather than telling a bit more. Statements you use to tell the reader that someone is pleased or confused, can be done with a more flowery description of expression. I mean the under 5k word limit clearly worked at getting a bunch of shorter fics encouraged. Not too sure about the word count limit since the only one that did end up near it was the Towa fic and that felt like a fic that was getting strangled by the limit rather than encouraged by it. So that's probably a sign to keep an under Xk short fic tag as an explicit contest category, but drop hard word counts to keep creativity free.
As for the genre categories, those are probably a failed experiment. Unless the next contest wants to hold a dynamic 'best in tag' vote for tags that have lots of fics tagged with a genre at their polls those should probably be dropped unless a better idea can be found.

Agreed on the hard word limit; it's an overly blunt and simplistic tool to limit scope creep (which was, to be fair, a reason for missed deadlines in the last contest), i.e. it stifles creativity too much for the benefits it has. Maybe categories for longer fics could be worth trying, though.
I feel like the "genre" categories shouldn't be something the fics are sorted into based on tags, because that encourages writing for the categories instead of just doing what you want. It also ends up producing uneven and artificial divides. Instead of making a category for all fics with the "Comedy" tag it might be better to just ask "Out of all the submitted stories, which was the funniest?" in the end.

Generally speaking, word counts are there to make the author think long and hard about their writing and make every word count. The intent this time around was to prevent scope creep. The 5k category proved to be really popular so I think the solution is to slash the limit again to 10k words.
I guess it's a question of what the goal of the contests is. In my mind, it's to a. attract new writers and b. maybe get the imagination flowing to resident writers. In my opinion, the contest should be overall encouraging new and fresh ideas from both groups. I think a smaller limit could accomplish both by giving new writers a "large" goal but resident writers a small enough one to maybe take a break from their WIP and get a one-shot out. I see your argument but I'm not sure if that would shake any fics out. People getting lost in their WIPs was a real problem last time.

As for the purpose of the contest, I think that's still up in the air.
First one was blatantly a 'fish for new writers' thing but became more of a friendly competition since everyone at least tried to write something for it. This one leaned more into the competition between thread aspect with the official categories (even if it didn't really work out).
I guess if the next contest runner wants a more defined direction the word count limit will be a tool to define what they want the contest to be like.

Depends on which series, really. For two of them I've released an opening chapter or two because they were interesting ideas, only to end up with no clue on where to take the plot, causing me to move onto other WIPs while I sit on them and try to brainstorm what I can do with the setting I've created.
Then there's a couple of unreleased series I'm working on, most of which have the basic plot beats planned out. Nothing concrete but I have a beginning, some important scenes and an ending that's subject to change. I'm trying to hold off on releasing these until some of my other stuff is out of the way.
The only series of mine where each chapter's events are set in stone (for now, at least) is an ongoing one I've been working on since the beginning of my time here. My plans never go exactly like I expect so some of it might deviate from the original path, but I have a clear direction on where to take the main story. Or I did, at least. Right now I'm just following what the me of the past plotted out.

I usually have the ending decided and sometimes I have narrative checkpoints I set up. In Blackbean, there's three checkpoints before the conclusion. I can still have a lot of freedom to go where the winds of creativity take me but it doesn't leave me feeling paralyzed by possibility as a result.

These checkpoints are also somewhat vague so I don't have to forcefully move the plot around in order to make the characters take their places.

For HoloJourneys I started out having the first two arcs outlined, and I have several key points and scenes I wanted to take place at some point, but had no real idea what would happen leading up to it. Now I have a pretty big file that contains my coming arc content and ideas. The nice thing about those notes and outlines is that they can always be subject to change. If you reach a certain point later than you thought, or decide it doesn't quite fit with how things transpired leading up to it, you can always change it.

Author of Miotastic comfort here, I didn't really think to submit it for the contest at the time since it had been a while since I wrote any smut, and I wasn't sure if it was submission worthy back when I anchored it.
