I think Mel's firing was the unfortunate result of Rushia's firing and the need to maintain consistency. I remember when Rushia got terminated the leading theory was that the documents she leaked to JP Keemstar had sensitive information in them. Mel's own reasoning was that she spilled sensitive information to someone she thought she could trust. Though the reasoning and severity of the incidents are obviously different with what we know now, Japanese Corpo Autism and legal consistency would compel Cover to treat the incidents as the same, even if they did everything to give Mel a good send off in the process.
