Also are you taking into account cost of living? Depends on the industry though, but if you're in an industry primarily located in California your big salary is getting fucked over by high cost of living. I highly doubt even Tokyo cost of living compares to a state like California.

Mostly that. Game or vtuber industry primarily, or whatever other otaku industry I find my way into, I'm not that picky. Poverty wages isn't wrong but debatable, depends on the specific role and how niche the industry is (games are a lot bigger than vtubing for example). But I'm also not against working for a US company that does business in Japan in these industries, or a US division of a Japanese company. Either way, I'm learning the language.

Well I can tell you right now that I am a game programmer and that 1/5 number was for lead gameplay engineer US west coast vs Tokyo. I actually ended up at the US branch of a JP company so my nihongo skills ended up being useful.

I learned hiragana and katakana in about 30 seconds each, took about 5 minutes to learn all the kanji. I studied for 1 month, and passed N1. It's so easy, just don't be shit.

A question for everyone, is learning how to write kanji on top of reading actually worth it? Drawing kanji is unironically fun and super satisfying, but it's gonna take me fucking decades to learn how to write them.

Learning how to write kanji helps a shitload with being able to differentiate between the similar ones. It's less important than vocab and grammar but still worth doing

When I started studying JP I realized JP porn dialogue was the first thing I already had full mastery on because I've consumed so much of it throughout my life that I already knew all the important words. I can struggle to read media aimed at children but stick a doujin or a オナサポ video in front of me and I'll tell you exactly what they're saying.

In terms of practicality, Latin is probably the most beneficial in personal use, with Spanish and Mandarin being beneficial for business and IRL stuff. Things like how Steve of Gamers Nexus is able to bypass translators when purchasing things in Taiwan, being able to immediately get the gist of any language using the Latin alphabet, and if you live in America Spanish is insanely useful in day to day life.

Learning Japanese is kind of a luxury in the West, especially if you can take the time to just use DeepL and don't need immediate accurate translations.
That being said, if you consume a lot Japanese media, it could be worth it in order to play the games untampered with.
Though I will say Japanese is a way harder language to write than to speak.
I only made it to Japanese 3 in highschool, but listening to so many vtuber clips+anime I've both retained what I learned, and picked up a bit more. Afaik the reason Japanese is such bullshit is because it's not what you say, but how you say it. Like, I still remember we had to memorize like five different ways to count shit. They were all still just regular counting, but each one was specifically meant to be used for specific things, and the whole language is filled with bullshit like that

I went on a trip to China when I was a teenager

Yeah but I'm very lazy and lack the attention span (as you can tell by me watching vtubers) for long studying sessions so the progress is pretty slow. Getting basic vocab and understanding of grammar isn't that hard but even with so many things being contextual it's still a never ending grind. So watching video game streams is pretty fine by now but zatsudans are still a challenge.

Is what I would've said a day and a half ago but y'know what. I've had a weird thing going on the front of my chest just below the sternum that feels like tightness. Comes for a pulse and then goes away for ages.
So if it's nothing when I see the gp in two weeks I'll start dabbling in learning and expanding my japanese knowledge beyond "cat" "black" "purple" "brother" "sister" and "chikubi."

I'm half brazilian half Japanese. My grandparents speak, I keep asking them to teach me. We got to spend a lot of time together and they give me sweets and money now. I can't tell them the only reason I started caring about our ancestry is I really just want to save Mio before her eggs dry

I still struggle with listening, but I hope I'll be able to dedicate a bit more time to that once the Wani vocab cards don't loom over me anymore.

I passed my N2 a couple years ago but still can't speak nihongo. I have almost no issues following nihongo chuubas or reading tho.
