What does everyone here think about giving (You) a backstory in these fics? Things like making (You) someone who's already known by people such as a famous actor, or giving (You) a really intricate and detailed past?

I personally kinda like it, because while it takes away from the self-insert part, it adds a lot to the story and you can still just imagine said backstory to be yours.

I usually enjoy detailed backgrounds since it helps establish a setting and can justify actions in a story. Holofantasy's Anon knows how to fight because he's spent most of his life since he could walk handling a sword and practicing stuff. It usually depends on the nature of the story. A short story for example doesn't really need one or if there is, it should be fairly simple that the reader is quick to catch on (Kinstsugi has You being Mio's manager and She's not horny she's lonely has You be a wandering traveler going to explore the world before settling down).
If the story is long however then it either needs the (You) to undergo character development or for (You) to have a past because it justifies how (You) act in the story. like how >>7450922
mentioned, it gets weird if (You) start to do things that have no basis for how (You) were able to do it.

A good example of this in long stories is Cover High and Holo fantasy for the former and latter respectively. Cover High has (You) hate Pekora at the start then changes to begrudging respect then to friends then to having (You) develop feelings for each other which keeps the reader interested. Holofantasy has you be a squire from the get-go which explains character motivation and skill.

But in the end, it depends on what you think is best for the story. If you decide a background is important then go for it, if not then don't

Yeah, I know, which is why I've never seriously put much thought into it besides that.

Every time Anon manages to win an encounter that would've resulted in hardcore /ss/ I feel like I've let people down to some degree. I considered going further and having choices in the middle of the story, but immediately realized how autistic that would become. If you want every choice to matter (lead to a unique page of writing) you will need to atleast double the total alternate realities. There's is also an alternative to making a CYOA Book in making it a quest.
