language models are hard to measure objectively, but claude has the best mix of appealing wording and working logic I've yet seen in any LLM, it gaps GPT4 by a fair margin for the kinds of scenarios I like to run. At the end of the day it's still a pattern following average of the data it was trained on though, so there are some claudeisms and you'll get a little more bored of it once you've used it a lot - like every LLM.

imatrix quantizations (denoted by iQ) are optimised for gpu and run like shit if you offload at all to cpu, not sure about actual performance gains as I can only run cpu, one of the big benefits of yuzu alter is that it's an 8x7B model meaning while it uses a lot of ram it runs really quick

Just going to rant a bit about the state of things right now about local stuff and give some updates about things. The main thing is that there are no new developments since Llama 3 released. There are so many bugs being worked out on the thing and fine-tunes are at best regressing the best parts of the official instruct model like trading better knowledge for worse story telling and vice versa. The next time something interesting is happening possibly is Google I/O on May 14th and I don't think we'll see a response right away either. I think most model drops to the public are also waiting on or reevaluating if they can get close to Llama 3 before releasing again so I don't expect those to start up again for a while. Shit just sucks when we're all in a waiting cycle and no one knows what they are doing.

I feel like you aren't offloading to GPU at all, the speed sounds like it is CPU only. I really do hope you have a GPU from the last 5 years at least and if you are using AMD, that is going to be a bit if hell if you aren't using their high end latest ones. If you are using Oobabooga which I think you are, you missed a crucial step mentioned as optional to actually get it working but needed badly for speed which is offloading to GPU.

As a basic reference, setting it to 30 uses just under 6GB VRAM for 13B and lower models. (it varies with model architecture and size)
You can go to Q5_K_M model before you start getting some seriously noticeable loss of quality. And the go to for small models for RP is Fimbulvetr-11B-v2 which was the best small model before Llama 3 for RP at that small size. If you want to take a gamble at what Llama 3 has produced, there is Poppy_Porpoise which is the best so far but is basically a mish mash merge of other finetune models and orthogonal steering is still a no go which should nullify refusals without impacting model quality (we have one shitty random quant working of that unfortunately).

You need expensive hardware, we're talking an investment of tens of thousands of dollars for Nvidia GPUs with 48GB+ VRAM. Usually, people go for several 3090s cheaply to finetune stuff, and for a MOE of 7x22B, that outstrips the 4x24GB=96GB you can dedicate to it of VRAM for training. The best you can do on commodity hardware is 70B tunes. I am personally waiting for better L3 70B tunes. There is Llama-3-70B-Instruct-Storywriter for RP but it's again a nerf of intelligence, Midnight Miqu will still be on top before someone figures it out.
